Newborn CBC Interpretation

Good day everyone.

My wife and I are kind of confused with the behavior of our 5-day-old daughter. We decided early this morning to go and consult a local pedia due to the following symptoms:

1. She has a hard time burping which leads to vomiting. As of yesterday she vomited twice.
2. She consumes less than 2oz of milk every four hours.
3. She seems to fart a lot with less poops. To be exact, her poops are yellowish in color and looks like tiny stones.
4. She has heavy breathing while sleeping.
5. Sometimes when she breaths, we hear sounds.
6. Chronic sneezing.

Her pedia said that her vitals are all normal. She advised us to have our baby burped every after her feeding. She also mentioned that we must replace the nipple of her feeding bottles because the nipples' drops do not suit a newborn.

After that, she urged us to have a our baby's CBC and platelet be examined and here are the result:

Hemoglobin ----------------  163.2
RBC Count  ----------------    5.44
Hemafocrit ----------------   48
WBC Count  ----------------   8.5
Segmenters ----------------   35
Lymphocites----------------   63
Monocytes  ----------------   02
Platelet Count-------------  310

Blood type ---------------- O+

We appreciate your professional advised with this matter because every baby is a precious one.

Thanks.

I'm no expert, but a mother of five.  So this is not really an answer but a few suggestions you might want to consider.

She may be gulping down too much air.  New nipple will hopefully help.

If you are giving breastmilk, it doesn't sound like she is nursing / feeding frequently enough.  Go for frequent feeds, every two hours, with no restrictions.  Let Baby nurse until she is content and finished with one breast before switching.

If you are giving formula, consider that Baby may be allergic to the formula and unable to properly digest it.  This might cause vomiting, funny stools, and gas.

If you are not giving breastmilk, but would like to try, you still can!!  Contact La Leche League for more information.  You may find that Baby is happier on breastmilk.

If she is eating breastmilk the poop should be seedy.  I hope the nipple change helps with the feedings and gas.  Each lab has different "normals" and they vary by age & gender.  Contact the lab for these ranges.  If they have already told you if some of the #s are low/high it would be helpful to share.

No expert, but I do have 3 kids. Every bit of that sounds normal to me. Except the type of poop. Yellow is normal, but being little balls means she is a little constipated. May have to buy her a baby laxative. Newborns make tons of funny noises and for some reason always sneeze! Don't worry she will be fine.
