3 of my kids had the rice cereal in their bottles due to reflux, both with breastmilk and formula. We occasionally had constipation problems but nothing that would lead me to believe it was the iron in the cereal. I agree with the Karo Syrup remedy. Works great! Also, taking a rectal temp-well acting like you are-can sometimes stimulate the bowels as well. Also, you can use pediatric glycerin suppositories. They pediatric ones are already smaller, but I always cut them in half and use the smaller end on younger infants. Works like a charm, within a couple hours it has always produced a bowel movement.
My son (4m) has problems with constipation and his dr told us to get the baby stool softener. The brand we got is "little tummy's" I think the box calls it a baby laxative. The pharmacist said to give him .25 ml once or twice a day. He almost always has a bowel movement in 12-24 hours after taking it
She doesn't have lactose Intollerance, but she has a cow's milk and soy milk protein allergy. So she has to be on Alimentum or Nutramigen, I can't try the regular formula with the cereal in it yet.
I tried 1oz of prune juice and a pediatric suppository and it didn't work. I tried 2oz of apple juice...nothing. So when I took her to see my mom she told me to make her a bottle of sugar water and a few hours later she had a bowel movement. The majority was hard with a little bit of her normal consistancy, so should I give her a little bit more tomorrow?
The best thing to do is to put 2 tsp of DARK Karo syrup in a bottle with 2 ounces of luke warm water. My old ped used to give this little remedy out on a small piece of paper, for constipation. It works like a charm. And it does have to be the dark Karo and it does have to be in water. It may work with juice but I would stick to the water. The syrup will sweeten the water, so you shouldn't have too much trouble getting her to take it hopefully. Don't look for it to happen in a few minutes though. It may take a few hours but that's what I like about this remedy. It will fix the problem naturally, without giving her diarrhea or any other side affects.
If this doesn't work within a few hours, try adding just a tad more of the Karo to the 2 ounces of water. I can't remember for sure if it's 2 tsps of Karo or 2 tbsp, but I am almost positive it is tsps. 2 tbsp seems like an awful lot of syrup for that much water. But this will work great for you.
As for the prune juice...it doesn't take much so don't worry if you can't get much of that down her.
I was lactose intollerant as a baby and so most of my bottles would come up until my mom put me on soy based formula and then I could keep it down and I went back to being a happy baby
My youngest son had reflux as well as an infant. He was placed on enifamil ar and meds. Have you tried the formula with rice already in it? Also you could try an oz of prune juice.
Talk to the pharmacist. They can recommend a suppository for her. My daughter had all kinds of problems and when we started cereal the same thing happened. It's an all natural waxy thing that you'll stick up her bottom and within 30 minutes she'll have a bowel movement. If it's been more than 3 days I would recommend that. You should call your pediatrician too...they might recommend something else. Poor baby =(
If I don't give her the cereal then the majority of her bottle comes up because of her reflux. I've tried everything in regards to it, and the cereal is the only thing that works. I've also tried everything to get her to have a bowel movement and nothing is working. I know that she's constipated because her stools are super hard and there hasn't been much.
If there's iron in the cereal it can cause constipation. If she doesn't need the cereal then I would skip it.
