Oh yeah I'm definitely NOT worried about the shop being unsanitary because we own it. My boyfriend is the artist and I have 9 other tattoos so I know how to keep them from getting infected I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same conclusion about contaminating the milk thank you all!!
Its not the risk of the ink, its that the shop may be unsanitary an you could contract something and.pass it along to baby. The tattoo place I go, the artist wouldn't tattoo me if I was bfing. They are sanitary and follow precautions, but its shop rules. Its just to cover themselves against a law suit.
This is a link from the Le Leche League about this very issue. It's not unsafe.

I have also heard and it was confirmed by my Dr. that the ink molecules are too big to pass into the milk. My advice would be to make sure that the tattoo place is SUPER clean you especially don't want to get any type of infection while breastfeeding. Also, make sure to take VERY good care of the tattoo also to prevent infection which could pass in the milk. I got a tattoo when my daughter was 4 months old and still exclusively breastfeeding. She's 5 and PERFECT! I feel very trashy admitting this, but they took such a long time on my tattoo that my aunt had to bring my daughter too me so I could nurse her while they were finishing up my tattoo :-)
No it is not safe it can still contaminate the breastmilk.
