Thanks guys.. Helped alot... She hasn't wrote any fractions so im guessing brim might mean 4/5ths?! Would that be right?! Because if 5/5ths means free and she had wrote that previously... Then changed to brim I'm guessing thats the next stage?! Would I be right in saying that?! I keep getting.g the tightenings in my stomach along with period like cramps but they are irregular so I am guessing these are just Braxton hicks.. I go to see midwife na week tomorrow so I will ask all these questions when I see her and I will let you all know how I get on... Thanks xxxxx
Relation of PP to brim
PP (presenting part) refers to the bit of your baby that will arrive first (usually the head). Your midwife will note down how much of your baby's head can be felt above the brim of your pelvis as fifths: 5/5 means that the head is not engaged at all and is often described as being free, whilst 0/5 means that the head is fully engaged (your baby's head has moved into your pelvis ready to be born). So basically the lower the first figure, the more engaged the baby's head. E or Eng means engaged, while NE means not engaged.
Brim is the top of the pelvis. It does mean that the baby has started to engage but it is usually written in fractions and if there is no fraction next to it then it isn't engaged enough to put one down. Presuming baby is head down, 5/5 means babys head has just started to enter the pelvis and the fractions go all the way down to 0/5 when the baby is pretty much being born. Don't worry about it too much as it can take a long time for baby to engage fully and sometimes baby settles into your pelvis and then comes back up again. One of my babies was engaged from 29-34 weeks and came back up again until week 37. If your midwife was concerned about preterm labor she would have told you. If you are worried just give her a call and ask her
Ok thanks... Does anyone know what brim means?!
My son dropped at 30 weeks, and I'm 35 weeks today and he is still cooking. Not sure what brim would mean. It's probably something for the receptionist at check out. I would call the nurse tomorrow though and just ask.
