Kind of strange

So I started itching in my vaginal area right after my period in April. The next month, I was itchy before. I treated it as a yeast infection both times, and it seemingly went away. The next, I had been on acidophilus (don't know if this is why, but..) I didn't itch that month. I went off of the acidophilus, and during July, I got itchy right after my period again.

Now, I'm kind of itchy again. And I have noticed some very small bumps right below the vaginal opening. Depending on the time of my cycle, they seem kind of irritated sometimes when touched. I have this back and forth constipation/diarrhea as well, meaning I wipe a lot. I noticed what seemed like a small scratch in my perineal area, that I attributed to wiping so much. But sometimes, (again, seemingly depending on the time of my cycle) there seems to be some burning when stretched along with the itching.

I do shave this area, however not super often. I am not sexually active - I was once, three years ago.

Could this be bacterial vaginosis? I say this because I highly don't think it is an STD or anything, as I'm not sexually active and it seems to kind of be back and forth. I did mention the itching to my obgyn and she said that it was most likely an irritation to something I was using - so I've switched to a different soap etc.

I was also recently put on birth control, and I can tell a difference in the regular discharge of my vagina. Not smelly, strange colored, or anything. It just seems to be a bit more than before.

I'm worried.. my OCD and anxiety is kicking in. I know I need to see my obgyn and ask..

If you consume a diet high in sugar, have been on antibiotics, these can bring about thrush.  You do not have to have a discharge for it to be Thrush.  The skin can become itchy and/or sore.  You can also get Thrush in the mouth and throat.

You can buy from the pharmacist a cream for thrush in the genital area and there is also an oral one dose capsule called Fluconazole 150mg that can be purchased from the pharmacist or you could get a prescription from the doctor for both of the meds.

At home, do not use any soaps, shower gels, feminine sprays.  These can all change the PH levels in the vagina bringing about the discomfort of itching, soreness and sometimes a white discharge caused by Thrush.

You can bathe in a bath with a couple of handfuls of oats and also for relief of the discomfort you can apply natural yogurt to the area that is bothering you.  Yogurt is cooling and also acts like an anti-inflammatory.

Only wear cotton undergarments.  Avoid tights and tight trousers.
Thrush likes warm, dark and damp and the right PH levels for it to multiply.

Eating natural yogurt is good too.

I have tried the home remedy and it definitely does work.

When you wipe your bottom, make sure (no doubt you do anyway) you wipe from front to back.

Eat a healthy well balanced diet with fresh fruit and veg.  Avoid refined foods like cakes, biscuits etc.  Drink lots of water 2-3 litres per day is usually recommended.  And do some form of exercise, even if just going for a walk for a few minutes each day.  This will help with your bowel movements.

You did the right thing in taking the acidophilus.

Best wishes.

Thank you so much for all of your input. I went to the obgyn yesterday, said it was definitely yeast. Got a prescription, hopefully all will be well within the next few days!

I have tried the home remedies, but it comes back every month. Hopefully the meds will stop that.

I always wear cotton undergarments, and yes, always wipe from front to back.

And you know, you are the first person that has told me that the acidophilus is a good idea!

Glad to hear that your problem has been identified and you now have the appropriate med.  Thanks for your feedback.

Just be aware that even with the medication, although it will help to get rid of the yeast problem initially, you still may be prone to getting it back again.

I have to be very careful with what I use to wash and also my food intake. Antibiotics can also bring out the yeast problem, because the antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria, but also the good bacteria.  That is why the acidophilus is a good thing for you to take.

If you get desperate and have no meds left should you be unfortunate enough to get the condition back again, don't forget to apply yogurt to the skin with the problem.

Best wishes.

If you get put on a course of antibiotics, ask your doctor for a prescription of Fluconazole 150mg a one dose oral capsule that you can take when you finish the antibiotics.

Best wishes.
