Why do I see patterns in the dark with my eyes open?

When I was a child I saw things in my bed, like birds, and I would be terrified. Now I can't see a blasted thing in the dark and have no idea of space.  I see what looks like patterned drapes when I am in the dark. I can never find my lamp or a table -- nothing is in the place I thought it was. I can't find the entrance to my bedroom. One night emptying the garbage I walked into our parked car on the way back in the house.  I bring a flashlight now because I can't find the curb.  Now in the house I just turn on lights as I walk. But what is this?

I don't know but sometimes if I rub my eyes too hard sith them closed, I zee like all kinds of colors and geometric shapes..
