I felt like i was shocked awake while i slept

I am 21 years old. healthy. no known family medical problems.  I take citalopram for anxiety, beyaz for birth control, and sprironolactone for acne.

Last night i had the weirdest thing happen to me.  I was completely asleep and dreamt of trying to solve some sort of puzzle or problem that i just couldn't figure out.  I was suddenly "shocked" awake like someone had stuck my finger in a socket.  While i have never actually been shocked by anything, i can describe the feeling as having the worst static shock you have ever had happen simultaneously over my entire body.  It was so bizarre. I jolted awake have these weird heart beat palpitations and i felt extremely hot and flush and started to sweat.  There was a type of shocking pain for about half a second and then my eyes popped open and i was breathing heavily because it scared me that i was just shocked.

I have experienced that "falling" feeling when i doze off, but this was nothing like that.  I was dead asleep and felt like i had been shocked.  Has anyone else ever experienced that?  or does anyone know what it going on?

Hormones like birth control can cause hot flashes and anxiety too (especially if it's an estrogen pill). I'm not saying put yourself at risk by randomly stopping, of course, but a new brand could help. You might also want to check with your pharmacist about interactions.

Also, the fact that you have acne and anxiety could point to a hormone problem like PCOS or others - you might get some excellent information if you see an endocrinologist. If you do have an underlying problem, you might feel better if it were treated. I'm surprised how many doctors just treat acne instead of finding out why.

And the dose hasn't been reduced lately, I take it?  Then I'm mystified.  Hopefully, it will be one of those things that happens once and never again.

I have not missed any doses.

Did you, by any chance, miss a dose of citalopram?  I have heard of "brain shock" symptoms from people who were going through withdrawal on other SSRIs.
