Hi,
You mentioned about possible side effects when taking the prescription drugs. Side effects are a constant issue when dealing with any type of prescription.
My wife had an issue sleeping and was interested not in a prescription type of sleep aid, but in something that would have no side effects. She was thrilled with the results of Fast2Sleep.
Here is a link, you can look at which tells about different user's experience with this:

There's nothing wrong with waiting until you have a better understanding to take the medicine. Do you get all your scripts at the same pharmacy so the computer can catch potential interactions? You could make a list of your questions and call the doctor's office and tell them you need a better understanding about the med. Some questions I might ask would be:
What does this medicine do for my problem that my others do not?
How successful has it been in helping people with my problem?
How does taking it at night help me during the day?
What are the possible side effects of this medicine?
Do some reading on your own. Ask your doctor. Then make a list of pros and cons to help you decide if the benefits are worth the risks. If making this list brings more questions, call the doctor again. They should appreciate that you are not out doctor hopping to get meds, but are a consciencious consumer. With more information maybe you'll be more comfortable taking the med. If not, listen to your instincts and discuss your concerns with your doctor.
