Hi,
How are you? I agree with going for polysomnography, an overnight sleep study for definite diagnosis and to rule out other types of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Primary insomnia refers to insomnia that is not caused by any known physical or mental condition and can be caused by many different things like alcohol, anxiety, coffee, or stress. A good sleep hygiene is highly recommended and involves eating regular times each day, not taking day naps, avoiding large meals near bedtime, going to bed at the same time every night and comfortable sleeping conditions. Take care and do keep us posted.
You my have what's called terminal insomnia - waking up too early and being unable to fall back asleep. I had this problem where I would wake up after 5-6 hours sleep wide awake. I would have to urinate and then would be unable to fall back asleep - I was so tired throughout the day. I had a sleep study (polysomnography) which showed I had obstructive sleep apnea. I was surprised as I was young, thin, female and do not snore. Ask your primary care doc for a referral for sleep study - this will help diagnosis your sleep problems
