Penis Pain - Glans and Urethra

I am a 42 year old male.  My wife and I had intercourse on 01/01/09.  At the time she had an outbreak of oral HSV 1 and performed oral sex.  We also practiced anal sex on this day.  Ten days after I began having discomfort on the right side of the Corona.  Within a week the pain spread to the entire Glans. I also noticed pain when depressing the upper section of my urethra, near head, and also an area at the base just before the testicles.  In general my entire penis felt inflamed.  There were no signs of STD (i.e. blistering, discharge etc.)

My family doctor ordered a urine culture and a battery of blood work.  All tests came back negative.  He prescribed Cipro and Aleve as a precaution.  A month has passed since my symptoms began and I am still having milder form of these symptoms.   I have an appt. with the urologist but cant get in until March 31.  What could I possibly have and should I be concerned?  Please help.

Thank yo Dr. Veena -

My doctor states that it is impossible to test me for HSV1 because I do not have any blisters which are required to obtain a test sample.  Is he correct.  Is it possible that HSV1 is localize to the urethra without any external blistering?  Lastly, should I worry about this spreading to other organs at this point?  Thank you again for your input.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. HSV1 infection is usually asymptomatic, but can sometimes be very painful with blisters. Also, investigations may not be positive always. So, I would suggest that you repeat the STD panel again and see the results. Even if they are negative, as there is a clear cut evidence of transmission of infection, it would be better to consider antiviral drug therapy. Antibiotics will not work for this infection.
Discuss with your doctor regarding this and follow his advise.
Best.
