What is meant by negative calories?

When I was searching diet tips for the weight loss, so many times I have gone through the word “negative calories”. Simply they are suggesting consuming negative calories; but before taking negative calories I would like to know what exactly negative calories means and what is role of negative calories in weight loss.
Please let me know, Thank you.

Hello Courtney....  Still now I am taking skimmed only. I heard skimmed milk are good to lose weight, that is the reason I am consuming them.

Hello Barb… Definitely I’ll go through your tips, instead of noodles and cookies I’ll try to add some other foods to my snacks. Thank you so much to your concern.

I read back in the thread and I don't see where I recommended 8 glasses of water/day.  While I totally agree that staying hydrated is absolutely necessary, I don't believe that we all need 8 glasses of water/day, because all the other liquids we drink, including milk, coffee, tea plus the foods we eat, all help maintain hydration.

The last 20 years of my working career were spent in the water treatment/filtration business and not all waters need to be filtered.  All municipal water suppliers, in the U.S. are required to do certain testing each month/quarter/year and if there are no toxins in the water, filtration is not necessary; in fact, it can be detrimental, because filtration removes some nutrients.  It is very important to be sure that the water you're drinking is free from toxins and filtration may be necessary.

Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and it lubricates your joints. Proper hydration can help reduce muscle and joint soreness when exercising.Burning calories creates toxins and Drinking water is one of the easiest efforts into your weight loss or weight maintenance plan. There's no excuse for not drinking enough water, you recommended 8 glasses a day into your schedule, so please drink clean and filtered water and to know about water filtration click here - WATER FILTER REVIEWS AND INFORMATION

I think 2000 calories is a better plan compared to 2200-2500.  I think your breakfast looks good, especially if your starch/carb is oatmeal.  Oatmeal with bananas and milk is a good choice.  Lunch and dinner looks good too.  I think a good place to tweak is with your snacks.  I have to be careful with starch/carbs because I could literally eat a box of crackers.  Portion control is crucial in this area.  If you're having an apple or other fruit for a snack, you might pair it with a cube of cheese and just 2-3 whole wheat crackers.  Watch noodle proportion too-about 1/4 cup is a small, snack size serving.  I see you like eggs. I like a boiled egg and 2 tablespoons of sunflower seeds for a snack.  Are you drinking skim/fat free milk?  If not, maybe begin switching to fat free.  Finally, I happen to love, love, love cookies and milk, but rather than having that as a snack, for me, its really a dessert or an occasional splurge.  If you like an end of day sweet, perhaps consider dark chocolate or even half a banana with chocolate sauce drizzled over it.  Hope some of this is helpful.

What type of starches are you eating?  If they are foods containing white flour or sugar, you'd do better replacing them with a high protein food, such as a low fat cheese, whole grains, etc.

Noodles and cookies are generally not good foods for losing weight, unless they are made with whole grain flour and no sugar.

Try to opt for whole fruit, rather than the juice.  Whole food gives you the fiber from the pulp, while juice is pretty much empty calories.

Each meal/snack should contain protein, complex carb and fat.

Noodles, milk and an apple
Dinner:

What a lively discussion!  On the subject of pop, while I agree with you that they are filling, zero calorie and tasty, they are non-nutritive.  If you drink one on occasion, likely no harm done, but if you are drinking them instead of consuming foods and nutrients, well, for me, that is opting for a starvation diet.  Is that the approach you want to take?  How are you getting daily values for protein/carbs/fats/nutrients?

If you want to.

The "diet" or "zero" carbonated drinks have no calories, and they do fill people up, and to me, they taste nice, and as they taste nice, they encourage me to stay hydrated. when they are in the house i will drink up to 4 glasses worth a day, but without them in the house i drink one glass of water each day...
but it is up to you if you like flavor of them, or not.

Diets are tough, you have to stop a lot of what you enjoy. You don't need to stop drinking diet fizzy, so if you do enjoy them, then that is one less thing you'll be missing, and a little bit less suffering to go through.

It is good that you are getting a body fat monitor, anyone who does exercise should have one.

Hi Aadia… I am just trying to lose 3 pounds in a week. For some weeks I am succeeding my goals and for some weeks I am not. As you suggested I just try to get a body fat monitor. As you said with Barb “There is no reason why someone on a diet should avoid something without sugar. Carbonated drinks have no calories, and they fill people up, and they taste nice.” shall I start taking of soda?

The only way something mathematically can be measured as heavier than another is if you were to get a square block, say 5cm squared, of each material and weigh them.... =the muscle block would weigh more.

The % fat of the diet sausages are 2.6% fat (the leading brand are a bit higher)

For physical measurements to be accurate way of measuring rate of progress, there would need to be so many measurements made each time it was time to check progress, even then it is not accurate,.. like if someone starts going running, how do they know how much of their leg fat has been swapped for muscle? Body fat monitors ARE more accurate.

"Of course muscle is denser than fat, that is WHY it is heavier than fat...
which is why if someone gains a little bit of muscle that's not enough to notice physically, whilst loosing fat, it may seem like no progress has been made, even when it HAS. which is why a body fat monitor is a better way of measuring progress."

No, muscle is NOT heavier than fat.....  a pound is a pound, a kg is a kg.... it's not about the weight; it's about the amount of space the weight takes up.  Muscle weight is denser, so it takes up less space than fat weight; that's why we recommend that people take body measurements so they can tell whether or not they are losing weight/gaining muscle.

Yeah, the US has SOOO  many consumer laws, too,  but like everywhere else there are ways to get around the laws........ I can research it for you, if you like.

Our meats are subject to similar laws -- again, I'll say take a look at the ingredients in those processed meats and understand what they are...  Your leading brand of sausage is 58 calories/sausage.. how many grams is that per serving and how many grams of fat is in it?

Again, "real" meats/foods are much better than any processed foods you can buy.....

You said "certainly wouldn't tell you that their product may not be good for you".. Yeah they would. UK has SOOO many consumer laws and food health and safety laws, that they are required to prove with absolute, complete, unquestionable certainty that their product is safe and is as described, BEFORE they are allowed to sell them, if they weren't they wouldn't be allowed to sell their products at all.

And meat is subject to the same laws. No harmful chemicals... And they're not even that fatty. The lead brand is only 58 calories per sausage. The diet ones are even lower.

Muscle is not heavier than fat...... a pound is a pound (or a kg is a kg), no matter what it's made of..... did you not read, or do you not understand the concept of density, where muscle cells are packed very tightly, and fat cells are very loose and fluffy.  That makes a pound of fat larger than a pound of muscle, because it takes up more space, but does not mean that muscle weighs more than fat......

Just because sucralose is "natural" i.e. comes from sugar, doesn't mean it's healthy....from the quote I posted:  "Splenda is the trade name for sucralose, a synthetic compound stumbled upon in 1976 by scientists in Britain seeking a new pesticide formulation."  Note that sucralose is a synthetic compound..... what's "natural" about a synthetic compound?  Also note that it was discovered in Britain, as they were seeking a new pesticide formulation...... that's something you think is good for you?  My quote did not come from the splenda web site, which certainly wouldn't tell you that their product may not be good for you.

While we do have versions of "low sodium" processed meats and other foods, there is still too much salt in them and there are also other chemicals, plus excess fat, that have been proven to be harmful.  "Real" meat is always preferred over processed meats, whether it be in the UK or the US.

"It sounds like you may need to reconsider some of the things you believe."  I might suggest that you do the same, as well as more research to understand the ingredients of the processed foods you eat.

Splenda isn't "a few molecules from being a pesticide"

Quote "SPLENDA® Sugar Alternative is made with sucralose. Sucralose is made from cane sugar by a patented process that starts with cane sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non carbohydrate sweetener and is then combined with maltodextrin to make SPLENDA® Granulated Sugar Alternative so that you can spoon it out like sugar"

Quote "There have been over 110 studies conducted over the past 20 years on the safety of sucralose. After studying everything from blood sugar and dental health to potential side effects, the research has proved two key things over and over: sucralose has no known side effects and is safe for everyone who wants to enjoy it."

"natural - Definition [nach-er-uhl]
(a.) Of, existing in, or formed by nature" like Sucralose.

Only 70% of the carbonates over here contain aspartame, (30% Sucralose) and aspartame has been proven not to be dangerous.
Example; Quote" Many studies have looked for health effects in lab animals fed aspartame, often in doses higher than 4,000 mg/kg per day over their lifetimes. These studies have not found any health problems that are consistently linked with aspartame."
"Studies in people have not found that aspartame use is linked to an increased risk of cancer."
You really shouldn't believe all the rubbish on the news and in newspapers.

I don't know much about American meats, but i do know that a lot of UK food has reduced salt now, from ready meals, to meat. i just checked several brands of sausage, 2 sausages 1gram of salt. The UK is one of the most  well regulated countries in the world for food, even over America.

The English make scrambled eggs with; "2 large eggs and ½ oz (10 g) butter, plus salt and pepper" and that isn't just my recipe, most people here make it that way, and that quote was from Delia Smith own web page.

Muscle is heavier than fat. A 2 inch square block of muscle weighs 3 time as much as a 2 inch square block of fat. FACT.
So if someone gains 1cm of muscle and looses a 3cm block of fat, their weight will not change.

There will always be someone, some news program saying "A" is good for you "B" is bad, next time it will be the opposite way around. It sounds like you may need to reconsider some of the things you believe.

Splenda is just a few molecules from being a pesticide.......

"The FDA has no definition for “natural,” so please bear with us for a biochemistry moment: Splenda is the trade name for sucralose, a synthetic compound stumbled upon in 1976 by scientists in Britain seeking a new pesticide formulation. It is true that the Splenda molecule is comprised of sucrose (sugar) — except that three of the hydroxyl groups in the molecule have been replaced by three chlorine atoms. (To get a better picture of what this looks like, see this image of a sucralose molecule.)"

For a truly "natural" sugar, investigate using stevia, which is made from the sweet leaf plant.

Most diet sodas in the U.S contain aspartame, which is an artificial sugar and is not healthy.

Maybe your processed meats in U.K. have little salt; that's not the case in the U.S.  Most have as much in one serving as is safe for most people for an entire day.  They also contain more fat and other chemicals/preservatives that are not healthy.  Read labels carefully, to be sure you know exactly what is in the processed foods you're eating and learn what all those odd sounding ingredients really are.

I didn't say that veggies don't stop people from being hungry; I said they don't stick with you as long as protein.

Apparently, you make scrambled eggs a lot differently than I do.  I use approximately a teaspoon of coconut oil (no butter, margarine or salt).  I use a variety of seasonings, that don't include those three items.  Whole grain bread is used for toast, with only a teaspoon of butter......... the veggies are basically "free", adding no extra calories.  This meal takes only a few minutes longer to prepare than pouring a bowl of cereal, preparing oatmeal, etc...........

Muscle is not "heavier than fat".  It's merely packed more densely, so a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat, which is loosely packed and takes up more space.  Think a one pound rock vs one pound of feathers.  It will take a lot more feathers to make a pound because of their fluffiness, while it takes less muscle to make a pound because of its density. The difference between whether you have fat or muscle can usually be seen in the way clothes fit.

Everyone looses weight at different speeds, but if you keep a low calorie intake, then it is probable. As you are doing exercise, you may build muscle, so that may appear to slow your weight loss, as muscle is 3 times heavier than fat, so it will be hard for you to tell how much fat specifically has been lost, if you can get a body fat monitor, or scales with that built in, you should get a clearer idea of your progress. :-)

You said: "Artificial sweeteners can actually make you crave sugar more, which can cause weight gain, not loss" that is wrong.
The food i suggested has sugar, yogurts, low fat cereal bars, and cereals, are enough to satisfy a person for sugar, so sweetener is just to help lower sugar intake, not stop it... and besides, the sweetener i recommended comes actual from sugar, so is NOT artificial, but actually natural.

"You should avoid all soda." that is also wrong. There is no reason why someone on a diet should avoid something without sugar. Carbonated drinks have no calories, and they fill people up, and they taste nice.

As for Processed meat, the sausages i recommended, as with most processed meat in the UK, doesn't have much salt. just 1 gram per 2 sausages,.. so 1/6 of the daily recommended amount of salt.

You said vegetables don't stop people being hungry, only protein does, that isn't right either, whilst some people can't be satisfied without protein, they can still be full without it, and a small amount of protein with dinner is normally enough to satisfy a person.

... and your suggestion "eggs, scrambled with spinach, red peppers, etc, served with whole grain toast"  not so good, scrambled eggs contain butter/marge, and salt, and the toast would have butter/marge on it too. The meal is 500 calories, so ok, but not great, and most people don't have time for that in the morning.

You should check with your doctor to make sure you don't have health issues that may cause weight gain/inability to lose, such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, etc.

Artificial sweeteners can actually make you crave sugar more, which can cause weight gain, not loss.  You should avoid all soda.

Every meal should include some high quality protein, such as lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, low/no fat dairy or whole grains.  Protein takes longer for the body to break down, so it fills you up and stays with you longer than veggies or grains.  Vegetables are very good for you, low calorie and you can eat a lot of them, but they don't stick with you for very long, so you'll find yourself feeling hungry very soon, if you don't add protein.

Rather than cereal every day for breakfast, try a couple of eggs, scrambled with spinach, red peppers, etc, served with whole grain toast.....

Be careful with ham, sausage and other processed items, because a single serving can easily contain more salt than most of us should have for an entire day.

Opt for whole fruit over fruit juice, because whole fruit has a lot of fiber, which can also help you feel/stay fuller.

As requested, here is a list of some healthy low calorie meals for you;

A healthy breakfast; in less than 200 calories.
It is always a good idea to stick to cereal, as it's fortified with lots of vitamins and nutrients a dieter could normally miss out on,... and all cereal is roughly the same calories, so pick which ever you fancy, even chocolate or nutty cereals, as there isn't much calorie difference you can give yourself a variety, but it is a good idea to make sure you have a set amount each day, digital kitchen scales are great for this.
Try to have 50grams of cereal to begin with, then after a couple of weeks and you're use-to the smaller portions lower it to the recommended portion size written on the box, which tends to be 35-40 grams.
and have this with skimmed milk.

A healthy lunch; in less than 300 calories
4 rice crackers (no spread) each with 2 slices of ham, Any yogurt labeled as "low fat", as they are all roughly the same calories, you have variety to pick which ever you want. and you can have a piece of fruit with this.

A healthy snack; 75 calories
a low fat cereal bar, there are many varieties, averaging at 75 calories each

A healthy dinner 1; 400 calories
a piece of grilled or steamed fish or chicken with a salad and a boiled egg

healthy dinner 2; 400 calories
jacket potato, 1 cheese triangle and salad and a boiled egg

healthy dinner 3; 400 calories
jacket potato, a small tin of heinze or weight watchers spaghetti, and lots of mushrooms (washed, wrapped in foil and put in the oven, no butter)

healthy dinner 4; 400 calories
2 low fat sausages(grilled or oven done) , a lot of cauliflower and broccoli, and 200 grams of baby potatoes.

healthy drinks; coffee or tea with skimmed milk and sweetener, no-added-sugar squash, diet/zero fizzy, water, fruit/herbal/green tea. (no fresh fruit juice as full of calories)

One of the main things that helps people to stick to diets is variety.
Feel free to swap and change the meals to suit you, as they are a good base line to start from.
Best of luck :-D

I had gone through your suggested site; it clarifies so many of my queries. Thank you so much for your concern, daily I used to go 60 minutes of walk in morning hours and in the evenings I will go to gym for 45- 60 minutes. My trainer suggested me to do push-ups, pull-ups, crunches and hamstring. I am going through these working outs only, and there is no more physical workout schedule in my entire day. Are these working outs enough for me to lose 3 pounds in a week?
