Uterine Fibroids

Hello.  This is my first visit.  An ultrasound has shown I have uterine fibroids. My uterus is enlarged to that of someone who is twenty weeks pregnant.  The largest fibroid is 19.6 x 11.6 x 8.9 centimeters.  Basically a grapefruit.  They are pressing on my bladder and rectum.  My cervix is pushed out of alignment and my doctor cannot do a proper pelvic exam because of this.  She has suggested an abdominal hysterectomy with a vertical incision including the cervix.  I would keep my ovaries.  She also said that Uterine Artery Embolization was a possibility.  She seem to indicate that myomectomy was not a good idea.  I could live with the sympotoms if I knew they weren't going to get any worse but the position of the cervix is concerning. Has anyone had a similar diagnosis?  What options worked or didn't work for you.  Thank you.

If the fibroids are that big, it really seems like surgery is the alternative, not trying to shrink them with a drug or hormone blocker.  I'm glad you would keep your ovaries, I would be lots less concerned about losing my uterus than losing my ovaries, especially if I had had kids already.  (If you have not and surgery still seems like the best option, there is always IVF with your eggs and your husband's sperm and a surrogate.)  If you don't think the doctor is giving you good advice, by all means get a second opinion.  Good luck!

I'm 47 this year.   So having children aren't something I would plan at this stage in my life
but thank you for your suggestions.  If I was younger I would definitly want all the options available.  Thank you.

Thank you for your comments.  I'm feeling better about the procedure.  The more I think about it the more I think it is the right thing to do.  I feel the same as you have stated.  I'd be more concerned about loosing my ovaries which hopefully won't happen.  Thank you again.

How old are you?  Have you had children and/or do you want to?  Sometimes the MD can help shrink the inflammation of the fibroids with medication - ask about that.  When the uterus has become smaller, the ablation may be more successful.
