Dark blood, but light flow

Hi doctors,

I am a 16 year-old girl. I've never really had consistent periods, time-wise, but they always involved a bit of cramping the first few days, and average, normal flow.

A day ago, I started having my period, but without all the PMS symptoms--no bloating and no cramps. Moreover, the blood is dark, and the flow is extremely light--light enough that a tampon doesn't soak up anything, just gets spots of dark brown.

What could be the cause of this? Are STDs or pregnancy a possibility? (only curious..I haven't actually had sex)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
This could be oligomenorrhea that is infrequent or occasional very light periods. The causes could be benign tumors of pituitary gland. It could be due disease of thyroid gland like thyrotoxicosis, hormonal imbalance,  pcos (cyst in ovary) etc. Alternately you can consult a gynecologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

I'm not a doctor but I can tell you that what you are describing is normal. Our hormones act differently at times and we may not have the classic PMS signs and symptoms. The brown blood is simply old blood that was slow to expel. Try to just calm down and don't stress. It all sounds normal.
