excruciating sex

I'm 18 and I just tried to have sex with my boyfriend of 6 months.  It was my first time and it was excruciatingly painful.  It felt like I was being ripped in half.  He only got half way in and he had to stop because it hurt so bad.  There was plenty of foreplay, and we used lube.  I feel 100% comfortable with him, and he was very understanding and caring about it.  I really want to enjoy this with him but it's unbearable pain.  Will it always be this way?
