fibroids and ovarian ca

I am a 52 year old whose periods stoppeed abrubtly in january--I was shocked as i experienced what i would interpret as a very breif "peri-menopause" in terms of outward symtoms.
Anyway, with a family histotry of Breast Ca, i am concerrned about Ovarian Ca. I have had what I perceive as bloating around the middle and some pelvic discomfort. the confounding factor here isa 11cm pedunculated/embedded fibroid on the upper anterior wall of my uterus. It never caused bleeding or serious pain. I have had many US over the last 4 years for this.
Last month, I had another transvaginal--I wanted to see if it had "shrunk" ( it didn't!) with my new ( and miserable) hormonal status, and i really wanted the Dr ro see my ovaries--to see if there were any signs of Ca. The Right one looks fine, but she was really unable to image the left one as it is eclipsed by the fibroid, although she said there didn't appear to fluid in the area.
I wish i felt confident about her findings. I just have this feeling something is wrong. Does anyone have any experience with Transvaginal US and whether it would be very obvious if there was cancer--even with the large fibroid? I tend to be a bit hypocondriachal about this--plus Imoved form a big city to the boonies and feel a bit helpless with the minimal services and opinions out here.

Thanks!

Age 52 is the "norm" for onset of menopause. However, you haven't gone a full year yet without a period so you may not have arrived yet. I am menopausal and I love it!

Your bloating and discomfort is possibly due to the fibroid. I have a small (plum sized) fibroid but it's not causing me any problems. I did, however, have a 10 cm cyst on my left ovary that was causing nasty bloating and sluggish bowels (I thought it was my old age). It was removed this year and I feel wonderful now.

Guessing whether there's a problem or not with your right ovary is not a good plan in my opinion. With your family history of BrCa and these annoying symptoms, it might be good to get another opinion. Do you have many choices in your area?

As I went through my ovarian cyst business I learned that the only sure fire way to know if a cyst is malignant is to have it tested. Then again, 95% of cyst are benign. Mine certainly was. Has anyone mentioned doing a laparoscopy to take a good look at the ovary? That way they might be able to peek around the uterus and see what's going on. That's something to discuss with your doctor weighing the risks of surgery vs. just waiting to see what happens. Tough call.

Since this fibroid is hiding your other ovary I can't say one way or the other.  For my diagnosis they used a ct scan and between that and the fluid they took out they knew it was ovca.  I don't think there is a test that can tell with 100% acurracy if it's cancer or not.Sorry I can be more helpful, but I'm sure someone else here will know and be able to help.  Good luck~~~Joanne
