Many years ago I lived near a young married couple who were both white skinned.  When their baby was born, it was very brown.  You can imagine the shock to them.  It transpired that a distant blood relative of one of the parents had been black.

Yes.  Color is more complicated than the ability to roll your tongue, but the principle is the same.  If a dark skin color gene is present, it will show up and override white genes, although if you have one of each you'll be lighter.  White people have two copies of a white gene (again this is a simplification).  So when you mix we'll call the dark gene C for colored and white genes "c", you get different combos.  If one person is Cc, and the other cc, then the children can be cc (white) or Cc (dark).  It's more complicated than this since multiple genes go into skin color, but it's the basic idea.

Well, I am the product of a white mother and a black father.  My skin tone is like coffee with creamer in it.  I have four children all of white fathers.  Two of them came out white, and two came out dark like me.  Go figure.  Don't know what else I can say.  Blessings - Blu
