Legal Question... Dr. Got Me Addicted and Then Left Me to Withdrawal!! UNETHICAL!!!

I've been seeing my Dr. for several years and was prescribed Oxycontin for pain and Oxycodone for breakthrough pain.  Suddenly, for no reason, he says I have to go to  Pain Mgt. Clinic and he won't re-new any prescriptions.  I call the pain clinic, they don't prescribe narcotics and they can't do anything with prescription.  I call my Dr. back 5 days ago, and daily, I'm ignored and only left with, I'll try to call you back with an answer.   I'm day 2 of no meds....
Dr's can't do that, that's unethical... Anyone know any recourse to such a dangerous dilemma???  I'm screwed....
Thanks..

You tell me:

"Acting..... And, I didn't see anyone tell him he "needs to stop taking the pills".

Sorry...I drew the conclusion that that's what you meant by this:

"My personal opinion...get yourself detoxed off the pain meds, give yourself some time (probably a few months), then reevaluate."

Thats why I said this:

"Im not going to sit here and tell you that you should detox and you should evaluate your pain...etc...etc...thats not fair to you. NOBODY that responded on this thread is a doctor...including ME.."

You say this to me:

"Acting....While the OP doesn't have an addiction problem, I'd say this is probably the most appropriate forum as far as helping him through withdrawals.'

Im confused as to why you said that to me after I said this:

"Well, you got some great advice from nursegirl and atthebeach...I really dont know what else to add other than you can just stick around and participate in this forum."

Im am really just utterly confused why you felt the need to address me on this thread?

God Bless you

Acting....While the OP doesn't have an addiction problem, I'd say this is probably the most appropriate forum as far as helping him through withdrawals.  And, I didn't see anyone tell him he "needs to stop taking the pills".  I honestly think, while people certainly draw from their own experiences, that people here are giving fair advice based on the situation.

OP...I'm sure this is confusing, but this may end up being a Godsend for you, as honestly...opiates really aren't an optimal long term solution for pain control.  They weren't designed for long term, regular use.   Many times they even make the pain worse.  No doubt there are many people who need something for pain...but I think in the long run, there are more issues (cons)...from rebound pain, pain perception being worse while on opiates, etc....than pros.  Just my opinion...but I think this may be an opportunity where you can reevaluate your treatment plan and decide where your real; pain level is.  You can always go back on pain meds again if you feel you need them.

I don't think anyone here is telling you to stop taking pills because of their own addiction histories, just my honest opinion.  I personally have no history of opiate addiction, so my advice isn't coming from a biased place (just so you know).

Wish you the very best!

" I'm not an abuser.  I came here to deal with the withdrawals.. "

I didn't read that last part until after I posted my last response...hmmm

Well, you got some great advice from nursegirl and atthebeach...I really dont know what else to add other than you can just stick around and participate in this forum. You will hear others talk about the process they go through as they withdrawal and the tricks they used to help alleviate discomfort.

You will get through this...my advice to you is to channel all your anger towards that doctor into a positive force...use that energy your using thinking about how that doc did you wrong to something more constructive...and conducive to your health....holding grudges against someone only gives them more power over you...let it go and find a new doc who cares.

I don't know what to do....  For the first time in my life I was living without pain.  I accepted it, I thought it was going to just be a part of my life, then all of this. I'm not sure what to do, don't know if I want to go back on meds if I'm going to ever go through this again. I know a lot of people who abuse the meds, they have even come to me to get extras, so I understand. I will seek out medical attention to my problems.
Thanks..

I feel for you...REALLY! I do think that you will get responses that your not looking for sense this is an addiction forum. People on here hear you say withdrawal and they associate you with what they went through. From your description...Im inclined to believe you and what your saying. What comes to mind is if you were abusing the pills...youd have an alternative source to get them. It sounds like you were getting your script regular for a legit reason.

Im not going to sit here and tell you that you should detox and you should evaluate your pain...etc...etc...thats not fair to you. NOBODY that responded on this thread is a doctor...including ME...so really, you should be out there getting a second opinion...even third from a board certified practitioner. I understand you feel betrayed by your doctor...Im sorry for that. Like I said in my previous post...you have the option to file a complaint with the medical board....but I wouldn't be stuck on this anymore. Decide what your going to do and take action. This forum is to address addiction...and if your not trying to stop managing your pain with narcotic...this isnt the place to post this question because users of this forum seem.....I dont know how to say it without offending someone so...hmmm.....just know that people who were in your shoes (like myself) with legit pain issues who ended up abusing the meds...will likely advise you accordingly to how things played out in our lives....hence, the "you need to stop" comments because we are really talking to ourselves.

So, Im sure you can make another appointment with a different doctor. You have many issues going on and if evaluated by the right doc...based on what you have described...Im sure they will help you with some sort of pain management schedule if that's what you want to continue doing. If not, and you want to continue your detox and re-evaluate your situation...hey, you got some great advice on that end from the community here as well.

Good luck
