Oxycodone and back surgery

I have had about 12 years of chronic pain, slowly over the years I have progressed to about 8-10 oxycodone 10/325 a day along with klonopin. I am about to go through major back surgery and am worried about heavier doses of oxycontin or mscontin with major addiction problems. anyone going through the same thing?

I am in the same boat I know what your going thru. I was prescribed 9 10/325 oxycodone a day by pain Dr. Thats 270 a month and still went thru those early after a few years. I got up to 150mg of oxycodone a day some days more. I got hip replacement surgery coming up in January to relieve some of this pain I am in. I went the suboxone route but only took it for a week and a half and got off. It was fairly painless felt like hell for a few days but stuck it out. Now I am going to be in pain untill surgery but will deal with it I am getting steriod injections in my back and hip that seem to help along with heat and ice. Hope that helps

I agree with everyone talk to your surgeon there are other methods of pain relief without the use of heavy narcs. You should ask about Toradol it is a non-narc pain med just be cautioned some people are allergic to this med so you really need to talk to your doctor.

It's very important that you are honest with your doctor AND the anesthesiologist prior to surgery!

I agree with the above posters.  Talk with your doctor and come up with a plan.  That will make it much easier to get thru the surgery and recovery time.       sara

How much did you take before surgerys and after surgerys? My plan is to get completely clean a few months after surgery! Thank both of you for your input and advice, it really helps to talk about it. I will taper down to maybe 5 or 4 before surgery, I CAN do it.

I have to agree to talk with your doctor and get honest before the surgery. I can't imagine a doctor is prescribing that amount so I am sure he/she is unaware of your situation. If you talk with him before the surgery, he may suggest a taper plan to get you at a lower level by the time you go in. If not you will have problems after the surgery...they will not be able to give you enough to get you through that critical period for the first few days following the procedure.

I was faced with the exact same issue when I had my surgeries (5 of them).  I would speak with your doctor, and let him/her know the situation.  they have methods that can be put in place to assist you best as possible.  Ask alot of questions here and to your doctor and get as much information as you can.  Knowledge is power..  Take charge of your medical care.
