Littlebit: Yes! Great advice from Melie and Tramhater and Mark!
You have every right to state what med you will not take. You should be informed of any med you're about to be given when in the hospital and you have every right to refuse. You'll discuss all this with your surgeon prior to the surgery, which is great, and also speak with the anesthesiologist. There are narcotics given sometimes during anesthesia so ask about that. I can really appreciate all you've been through with the pain meds. I just hate to see all your options gone so give yourself a little wiggle room here. Post op you may need just a dab of something for pain, you never know. But,there are non narcotic pain relievers, too, so ask about that.
Good luck with this and good work on those 27 days! Now go eat some icecream!!
Yep, those wd's are real nasty! I hate the thought that they are only about 8-12 hours away from me. I've been on oxy for 10 years now, 480mg a day. I need them though, my pain is just as bad as withdrawals. Some days even all that oxy doesn't help much. I've been on everything there is, and like it or not, oxy's are better than being in zombie land all the time.
There just aren't any other options for me at this time.
I had forgotten I was a really nice person....lol....I like me today....
Gnarly I saw where u posted that ur brain will remember that response and want it so that's why I don't want it I'm not trying to be a martyr just terrified of this drug.....u know....but I know I'm gonna be in pain no doubt but I can't handle going through withdraws again I can't so I don't want it......I quit smoking and talk.g bc powders...I was too sick to smoke and when I felt like it it was 15 days wo one so I just quit them too....lol..thank u....
Oh I don't want anything....is rather deal with the acute pain for a few days than ever go through withdrawals that scared the **** out of me......I never knew u could get that sick and still live......lol....really that's how I felt though...I wished I had this site during the first.....just glad to be here and meet all u fabulous people...thanks...
Don't ask him, tell him you don't want them. Or, if you absolutely need something, use Demerol. You won't be able to stand that stuff for more than 2-3 days. It has a horrible chemical smell that you will start sweating out, plus it gives you an itchy rash (at least it did for me) You'll want it stopped, believe me. I really hated that stuff.
Wow thank u guys....@mellie wow u have really inspired me...open heart surgery wo pain meds I can do this..but then I saw where one of u guys said if ur brain feels that sensation from the drug I would want it.....well first of all I feel like I got tricked into this crap nobody told me what kind of drugs these were....they r hell and I don't ever want to go back there......the surgery will last 4-6 hours bc he has to go all the way into my spinal cord and put the Shunt in....so not an easy surgery....but the pressure is building so bad its hard not to get that instant relief but I'm fine I made it.. I just didn't know if I told them I didn't want NARCS after surgery if I had that right.:..i go Friday for him to tell me all he's gonna do... But he didn't want me to stop the pain meds so I figured if he ordered it then I had to take it but I will ask him Friday...thank u all so much...its been horrible.. thanks....
You shouldn't feel much pain from a shunt procedure, just a little discomfort around the incision site(s). Since you surgery is a month away, and you are already 27 days clean, you should be feeling ok by the time surgery day rolls around. You shouldn't need any narcotics for pain, and you most certainly can request that they not give you any!
Good luck with your procedure, I hope everything works out well!
IM WITH Tram you need someone else to control your meds and only take them for the bar minimum of time this is no time to be a marter your going to have legitimate pain.....Gnarly
I personally think that as long as someone else is in control of your meds, you will be fine. After the surgery, you may need some pain relief. You may not. There's no way to know right now, but you can have someone else control your intake, and you should be fine!
Congrats on your clean time!
Of course you can request it and they do have to respect your wishes. But you should talk to your surgeon ahead of time and talk to him about what they will do to manage the pain. My friend's dad had open heart surgery about ten years ago. He didn't like pain killers or things like Ativan, as he always had an adverse reaction to them. So when he had the heart surgery, they gave him Extra Strength Tylenol. I asked him about it after because I couldn't believe Tylenol would help the pain when he had his chest cut open and his ribs pried open!! And he told me very honestly that it really didn't hurt.
Everyone's pain tolerance is different and different surgeries bring different types of pain. If you're having surgery on your spine, depending on where on your spine, one thing you may be able to have is an epidural. Will you be inpatient after the surgery or will you be going home immediately? One thing you could get is Toradol. It's not a narcotic and it works very well. Again, depending on where the surgical site is, ice packs can work great in reducing pain.
I also had a friend, who's a nurse, that was addicted to oxycodone, Vicodin, Ambien and Ativan and an alcoholic. She was about six months clean and sober, and she needed to have rotator cuff surgery. She was very anxious about what would happen. She did take pain meds in the hospital, and she was also given a small prescription for the first five or six days, to take home. She stuck with taking it as prescribed and cut back on it herself after the second day.
I think you'll fine but you must talk to both your surgeon and your doctor to have a plan in place. Best of luck for a speedy recovery!
