Vicks NyQuil

Question

I found 7 empty bottles of Vicks NyQuil and another half empty bottle in my son's room. I am trying to research this substance abuse and would like any information you can direct me to.

I am a14yr old recovering from:nyquil, Xanax, and acetamiophen. I am a month clean, was addicted for3 months. Nyquil contains: alchohol,DXM,& acetaminophen, among other things. It gave me  10 hour high. I was: moody, irratable, tired, lazy, sad, didn't care about anything, and was losing friends. I view eminem ad role model, seeing how he too got off of nyquil. You and your son should listen to:déjà by, my darling, both by eminem. He really talks about the affects of addictions.

Teenagers, even adults, do whatever it is they need to do when they are in pain and need that relief. They really aren't thinking about their image at that moment. Addiction is addiction, whatever the substance - their is no elite group of addicts.

Although there are probably worse things he could be doing, trying to get high off OTC products is just downright sick and unhealthy. I have way more respect for someone who pops a percocet then chugs a bottle of nyquil. If I got caught chugging a bottle of Nyquil, I'd just be really embarassed more than anything.

Your son, I am 99% sure that this is true, is abusing the nyquil for the acitve ingredient and intoxicating drug called DXM, which stands for Dextro-methorphan, used in larger than normal dosages the user feels dissaossociative, has visuals, is light-headed, and has a general "trip" feeling that last for 6 hours to 8 hours. I am 22 and I know in the last five years it's popularity even among the people in my area let alone the whole enitre country has grown emmencially. It is a distant cousin and has some similiar effects as that of the drug PCP. It is in the same class of drugs- dissassociative anesthetics at large doses, at lower doses it acts as decent cough suppresant, and brings on some drowsiness. Drinking the entire bottle is usually a sufficient amount to make your son trip or get high, what he is looking for. I am personally allergic to DXM in large doses as  having several bad allergic reactions in my drug trying days, but I know a personal many who trip off of it weekly or more. I see no beneficial fun from it, as I was attracted to opiates and benzos, but many find it a cheap easy fun high.  Hope this can help somewhat, the amount you found is far to large to be jsut for sleeping. Defintely address the issue with him because it will only help to see how far he has got into his use of DXM or other mind-altering substances.

I found some info for you. Get him help right away - you know how kids are. They think nothing bad will ever happen to them. It sure is scary when you find your child dabbling or habitually using drugs or alcohol. It's a big red flag. I hope you get him treatment now so he doesn't bring this problem into adulthood with him (I don't know his age but it seems like he is a teen?).

I am so sorry ...I noticed once that one of my daughters was taking it at night to go to sleep...I didn't think much of it, until a while later and it was empty...I asked her about it and she told me it helped her sleep...I explained that it has alcohol in it etc...And i never bought it again...Now this was about 5 yrs ago...Today she is in rehab...Not for nitquil of course, but she now is an alcoholic and addict...
I have saw a program a while back that kids were buying and drinking nitquil s/p? to get high.....This is a bad sign for sure..
how old is he?
