I have to beat this!

I have been taking various prescription pain killers for several years. It started as my own prescription due to several physical problems that i still suffer from. I just have to beat this addiction. My question is how can i get past this when i know the kind of pain i will constantly feel once i no longer treat it with the pain killers? I'm sick of taking the pills but i also can't tolerate the pain. I need any advice you have please.

Hey Girl  how you doing today???  I wish I could wave a magic wand and make this go away  but you cant  you just have to go threw it  once your feeling the withdrawal like you are  it is time to jump  your only prolonging it....try not to let fear into the equation it is always worst in our heads then it turns out to be.... this is 1/3 phyical and 2/3 mental so be ready to fight it out on both fronts....the biggest single thing you can bring to the table is a positive attitude it makes the difference of being unconformable and suffering....suffering is a choice.... I have said this a million times but  ''you just got to be ok without being ok for a wile''''  this to shall pass....right now is a good time to prepare for your final detox   pick up a case of gatoraid you will need to force the fluids  pick up a big bag of epsom salt a hot soak will help with most of the symptoms  and the salts will help with the restless leg syndrome  rent a bunch of videos it will give you something to do at night  most people do not sleep the next step is aftercare  this is critical for recovery  I always recommend the N/A progam it is a simple 12 step progam the meetings are only a hour long and will give you some place to share where the people will understand the support is ausum and you only need the desire to quit you dont have to be clean so google a N/A Meeting near you and go...as always keep posting for support  where all her to help and we can walk you threw the whole process
let us know when you jump............Gnarly.......................

Hi & Welcome
I was reading this post yesterday but did not feel up to Parr to come in.
The thing about these type of meds is that they change the Body and the Chemical makeup of the Brain. They knock down alot of are "happy chems" and plug up the pain receptors. This is why tolernce can build up fast. Pretty soon they really are not working much at all. Thank about it like a baseball glove and a ball is already in the glove. Then you throw another ball toward that glove with a ball already in it. Well, you know it is not going to go into that glove. These receptors will become unplugged (sorta speaking) and then your endorphin will slowing begin to produce the natural morphine inside. YOU will find that you will actually be able to handle the pain better with other things. We also have receptors all over and in our stomach. As these start to heal, we get the bathroom issues. This is one reason we become constipated.
Make sure you start drinking tons of fluids and mostly water. Boosting the immune system up right now will really help. YOU still will go through a w/d, but it might not be as long or intense if you do a nice slow taper, and set your self up by eating healthy, taking some good vit/min right now. The physical detox will be over way before the mental. Like I said, these meds whack out our brain chemistry and there are many areas that get affected.
Protien & Amino-acids are very good for the Brain. You can find some good vit/min that you can add to water, like Airborne or Emergen-C. They have a immune booster one to a electrolyte one. Plus all the Bs, Cs and such will help. Some minerals like Magnesium, Potsium, D3 will help with anxiety and sleep. However, it does take time for all of this to kick in. When I c/t off 3 meds back in 2012, I ended up buying some great natural products, but these ones I mentioned are not to expensive, and you can pick them up at any store. Think about all the foods or vit/min with Antioxidants in them too. Just be prepared to go through a few stages of detox and that each day will get better. Working on staying clean is where all the work begins. Addiction is a brain disease or disorder and we can not usually touch any mind-altering drug or substance again. That pleasure part of the brain called survival will always remember the pleasure and want more & more if we feed it again. Just be Safe and set yourself up for success. You can also find some great info regarding addiction in a more scientific way. This has really helped me to understand it all and also my Church, Meetings and this site. I wish you the best and stick around for support and come on in and support others along the way.
Bless U
Vickie

Hi Revamy. Thank you for your story. Mine is very similar. I started very low on prescription meds back in2006 also for fibro and many back issues. My dr kept increasing because i was not functioning due to my pain. And as you had said, it seemed my pain only got worse. Then it became a habit to have the meds. I felt i couldn't function without them because i was so afraid of the pain. And like you i would much rather find an alternative to the pain meds. I want to learn to live with my pain. It sounds crazy but I'm just so tired of being dependant on them. I'm very nervous but s do very ready. I believe that there is life beyond. Thank you for your encouragement and may God be with you as well.

Hi Lesa, thank you for the welcome! I'm on day two of tapering. I don't have the will power to go cold turkey. From what I've read its awful to dive right in. My husband is being a great support through this and i really appreciate the community here. It's giving me encouragement and hope to do this. My mind is set and I'm more than ready to get away from these pills. I've cut down to just one a day already and i know i can do this. So thank you for your support as well.

Dear Minivin 73.I am living this now. I have been on narcotics for over 10 years for crohns, severe fibro and a broken disc c7. The crohns opened the door to many other issues pain wise.  I realized that the meds were actually CAUSING pain at this point and decided to taper off. This is a known , long term thing that happens.I was
very concerned about my underlying pain issues also, but decided to get my life back , and if the pain was unbearable, treat thru natural means or at least non narcotic meds.
As of Jan 3, when I started my taper, I was on 60 mg daily of extended release oxy and 20 mg of Vicodin. (2 years ago, I stopped a benzo and Ambien almost CT ...this was harsh)
I am doing a slow taper...now down to 15 mg of oxy, and as I figured, my pain from the underlying issues have not gotten worse and indeed a lot of my pain at this point was FROM the meds making me super sensitive TO pain.
You didn't mention what your pain issues are, but just wanted to tell you how pain killers do this long term. God bless you .

Hi Minivin Welcome to the forum.. 90mgs of percs is doable, You can hand them over to somebody to dole out to you and start a taper, that is dropping a small amount waiting a few days till your body adjust and dropping again doing this till gone. You will be in wd thru the process but it will be less in the end although you will still go thru wd Once all the opiate is gone, Our you can cold turkey (ct) This takes about 5 days of withdrawing feeling really lousy with the worst being day 3 and 4 Then you progressively feel better as time goes on. We have tips on how to get thru it many of us have and many our tapering right now.. It is up to you. If you do not have any medical problems with your heart and such there should be no reason you can not get off this drug today If you desired.. all it takes it making a decision and sticking to it.. I wish you well, lesa

Thank you for responding. I've read some of the posts and it sounds awful to go through but i really am ready to do this!! I would take whatever was available. Percocet mostly and I've reached 90 mg a day on most days. I do have a support team ready to help but they are new to this as well. So anything that i can learn for us to get through this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.....you sound like many of us.....your feed up with the pills and how they control your life....there is life after pills....many of our members myself included suffer with chronic pain after being on the meds for years they loose the ability to work the first thing you need to do is detox off them in order to see just where your pain level is....for me and many others you will find that once the narcotics are out of your system  things like tylonal and ibuprofen will work  I live in way less pain then I did taking a elephant dose of pain pills....I encourage you to read the posts we do home detoxs every day and can walk you threw the whole process  feel free to ask questions where all here to help and we all look forward to helping...just a few questions....what and how much are you taking???  do you have a significant other to help you threw the detox stage>??? let us know....Gnarly
