Why do Opiates give you energy??

If opiates are a "downer" drug, compared to cocaine and meth which are clearly upper drugs, why does it give you so much energy? When I do opiates I get a huge burst of energy to accomplish everything in my day and more. I can run around doing a million things, and I am so motivated. Sometimes I feel like I just took some adderall or something. So, does anyone know why opiates produce these effects in a person, and give them a lot of energy?

Oh, also, if I remember correctly, when I first started taking opiates it did not give me these same effects, instead of energy, I got tired, and would lay on the couch, however, after a few months, it totally changed, its like I am taking a different drug now. Did anyone else have these same experiences? Or know why it gives you energy??

Thanks

I am very addicted, i've been addicted for the past year and ahalf. It consumes my life, I have tried to stop many times and never could, and finally I went into rehab/AA and it worked for a little but I rela[sed months ago and haven't been able to get back on track, although I am trying again to stop. I am just wondering, as someone said, the "science" behind the energy of opiates, I don't understand how it gives a person energy. I see a lot of people on here talk about being "supermom" or "superhuman" getting a million things done, I know how horrible opiates are and how they destroy lives, aside form that though, I am asking because I am curious, how this drug gives a person so much energy. Even if it doesnt last for long.

I know what you mean about the energy, they do give you energy. I can tell you though, that honestly does not last--When i quit takin them after close to 3 years I was so far behind in everything--house cleaning, car a mess, yard work,  school work, bills---everything. Something happens after a short time that causes that "energy" not to be as productive. I dont know if you are addicted or just takin for the "energy" right now, but i can tell you that there is NO better time to quit than now--if your not addicted now consider yourself lucky and get out while your ahead----its a pain in the a$$ once it gets you

Yes....your brain has to get used to releasing it's own dopamine and endorphins.  When we do it for so long, artificially, our brain gets "lazy" and doesn't do it!

I am curious of the science behind your question as well.  The way I understand it is that the opiots trick your body to release endorphens.  This is how they help you cope with the pain once you have been hurt.  But I had the same experience that it would make me tired and then it turned and I got high from them..I went a long time without taking them maybe a year while I was pregnant and had a baby..I had a c-section and while in the hospital I had to take them and they had the same tired effect on me then.    Started abusing them agien and then would get high on them.   I do not know if this is correct thinking that they trick your body to release endorphens but the way I understand this at day 16 of trying to be clean ...is I have to train my body all over agien on how to release endorphens naturally.  I am curious on what other people have to say about this too..thanks for asking:)

The tiredness was the truth, and the energy is the lie that the pills tell us!  It's not giving you anything but making you high!  You are "high energetic" but not natural energetic.  The only way to recover anything resembling normal energy is to stop now!  It will only get worse.....the energy will go back to sluggishness and inability to do or think of anything but pills.  You don't want that!!!

Good luck to you!
