Detox off Methadone

I ended up on a methadone program after back surgery. I lost my insurance and the only way I ould continue was to enroll in the program.  That was 6 moths ago and I find myself now wanting to get off of the methadone.  I am on 55 milligrams daily.  The program is making it almost impossible for me to reduce my daily dose.  They have given me a window of 6am to 6:30am on friday only to see the doctor.  But the last 3 times I showed up then, the doctor was not there.  

I tried skipping a dose or two to see how I felt.  But after the second day, I was cramping and having cold sweats and feeling like I was going to die.  

What can I do?  Is there a way to detox from this stuff myself?  I was not a street drug user, but someone told me that the only way to do it was to start taking Herion for about a month...and then detox from that.  That seems a little extreme.

Under no circumstance would I suggest you using heroin as a drug to get off methadone, for a start, you dont know what **** you are buying on the street and one deal one day might be fine, exactly the same amount the next time could take you over or even kill you.  Street heroin can be cut with alsorts and do you really want that in your system? gravy powder, ketamine and god only knows what else.  You can reduce your methadone yourself, husbands drug worker usually suggests 5ml every 2-4 weeks, this lets your body adjust to the reduced level with minimal w/d.  Id also definitely not suggest substituting for another opiate or benzos, alcohol or even cannabis.

at this very moment im sick as hell. i went ct from 40mg, my last dose was October 31 2008, so like 6 days so far. right now i feel so nasty. i cant sleep at night, constant chills, sick stomach, diarrea, Extreme sneezes (ive never sneezed like this lol). only thing thats bad for me is the sleep. its horrible restless nights. i dont know much since its been like only 6 days, but i dont recommend taking heroin.. but like someone told me to check this out. http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Addiction/Methadone-Opiate-w-d/show/437?cid=76  ; very helpful info. good luck. you think its time to get past this and feel normal again. i forget what "Normal" is like. but im hoping to be there soon.

There are a few choices you can CT (I would not recommend that ) you can taper down and off ,some people go on suboxone to get off it but then of course at some point you will have to get off the sub There are many that say that's almost as bad as the methadone.what where you taking that they put you on methadone for.
