can the doctors be wrong?

The doctors told me that I wasn't withdrawing from xanex. That my dosage was so low and my vitals were fine and I wasn't withdrawing. I had friends tell me I was and I've been constantly worrying about it. Could I just be thinking myself into withdrawl symptoms or could the docs be wrong? They couldve admitted me to detox but didn't and gave me a sedative and sent me home. I'm very confused since I've been so sick to my stomach. Any opinions?

Yea. I experienced severe nausea, didn't sleep for 48 hours, and couldn't stop shaking or panicking. Now when I start getting really nauseous I take my dose but I'm still having difficulty with sleep. I fall asleep fine but I always wake up really early with a panic attack. I don't have a doc tapering me but I'm going for eval at a drug rehab center on wed. They should help me, right?

Since you decided to taper did your withdrawals go away when you took your dose? If so, there is a good chance it was withdrawals. But, as Jeremy said, if you were having  a bout of anxiety taking that dose may have helped that also. But there are specific withdrawal symptoms that may not be associated with withdrawal. If you were having stomach issues and or some physical pain I would put money on it that it was withdrawals. It would be hard for your mind to make up symptoms like that. Just because a doctor says that you were taking too low of a dose to have withdrawals doesn't mean he is right. Everyone reacts to things differently. I once took tramadol for 6 months for back problems, was taking more than prescribed around 15 a day, quit cold turkey, and didn't have any withdrawals. I've read stories of people taking a fourth of that amount for half the time that I was and went through he!! to get off of them. What isn't a problem for one could be just the opposite for another.
I think you are smart for tapering. Even if for some odd reason it was mental tapering should help that also. Only you truly know if it was withdrawals but I'm guessing it was.

you can experience withdrawal syptoms from 0.25mg a day if you've taken it daily for a long enough period of time. granted, its VERY unlikely to experience major physical withdrawal syptoms from a low dose...but the mental withdrawal syptoms aren't at all unexpected. for most people they might be mild but they could be severe too. it just depends on the person.

xanax is a very difficult benzo to withdrawal from. doctors rarely understand just how difficult it is....i think if they tried it themselves they might just have a better idea of what kind of hell it is. if you feel like its withdrawal, then it probably is...but hopefully you have a doctor supervising your taper and if they say you'll be ok then trust them. even with the best of tapers, you will experience discomfort to some degree, whether it be sleeplessness or mild to severe anxiety...thats why its important to have a doc involved in the process.

Hi there. Anything is possible and doctors are fallible human beings like you and I. Having said that, there are a prescribed set of symptoms associated with benzo withdrawal and if the doctor has assessed you as experiencing none of these then i would be inclined to agree with the doctor.

I am only guessing but i assume the xanax was initially prescibed for an anxiety disorder. Maybe you are experiencing anxiety bought on by the sudden absence of xanax. Have you been made aware of non medicinal anti anxiety techniques such as breathing exercises and rationalisation?

At the end of the day if you genuinely feel as though you are experincing benzo withdrawals and not just psychologically induced withdrawals compounded by an anxiety disorder then a second opinion cant hurt.

'There is no minimum required benzo dose that can precipitate withdrawals. This is an individual and subjective experience. The most important factor to consider when trying to determine ones predisposition to benzo withdrawal has to be the length of time on said medication.

Anyways. All the best. Regards Jeremy.

I was taking at most 1.5mg a day. But usually just 1mg. I stopped cold turkey but could take it so I'm tapering now. Taking half of a .5 in the am and the other half in the pm. Hoping to get down to a half a day and then nothing.
