I think the first key is reality check & settign a goal and commitment.
Reality is when you stop making excuses for eating and exercise habits and face the true music. We have been taking care of others more than ourselves!
Goal and Commitment, I wanna lose weight, be healthy for myself and my family.
Once the two is in place, you will start to find ways on how to do that. Sounds simple right? But the two key elements are the hardest. Once you have set a goal and commit to it, you will make time to exercise and make more conscious decisions on what you put in your body, even under stress.
Oh yes, the third I didn't mentioned is to be patient even when you feel that you are not getting results on the scale. Like eveything in life, there is no shortcuts. Good luck!
Hope this helps.

What types of diet and exercise have you tried? Can you give us an idea of your daily food/beverage intake? What kind of exercise do you prefer and you exercise daily? If so, for how long?
Sorry to answer your question with so many more questions, but if we know something about your routine, it will be easier to help you get started.
