I have this same problem and have never found an answer. It's hard to find anyone even talking about it online. I just threw up because I had to run outside in pajamas to get something out of the car. I gag every morning when I have to get dressed unless I'm sitting in front of a space heater. What gives? What is this? My doctor had no idea what I was even talking about. So frustrating.
I have the same problem . Glad to see i am not the only one... makes me feel better
Crazy to find this thread as the first link when I googled why I gag in the cold. I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one. I worry about it every winter. I will have to ask my doctor for some sort of prescription-strength decongestant at my next physical. Hope you all are doing well with this.
I've done it most of my adult life. I can remember my father doing it but not as bad. I also have a bad gag reflex. Can't stand tee shirts, ties, and necklaces. Was beginning to think I was crazy till I saw this. Thanks
Thank you. I hope you are still doing great.
I've been gagging for months now.
I spent several winters gagging in the cold. It was pretty severe and very unpredictable. Several people suggested that it might be mental, but it was a very physical reaction...I had no control over it. I saw several doctors and was treated/tested for several things over the course of a few years including asthma and acid reflux.
Nothing helped and this was one of the only places online I could find people talking about it. After a few winters in a row of this bizarre symptom a doctor noticed that my thyroid was enlarged.
With more testing they found that I had thyroid cancer (and Hashimoto's disease). I'm 26 and have since been treated by having my thyroid removed and am doing great. No more gagging in the cold!
My message to all: if something is off with your body...find out what it is. My body was clearly telling me something was wrong and I'm so glad I was persistent in trying to figure out what it was.
The cold air stimulated the production of mucus and in turn creates a lot of post nasal drip which is causing the gagging. Every Oct through March I wake up with the gagging and sometimes throw up because the mucus has pooled in my stomach too much. Decongestants can help and making sure you minimize the cold as much as possible (i.e. scarf around mouth when outside) and keep the air at home as moist as possible. The cold and dry air can cause trouble for the already stressed nasal passages/sinuses and throat. It's a huge pain and I hate it.
so i have that problem as well and actually moved to florida from the northeast because it was causing a big problem. i am moving back to philly in a few weeks and need to do something about it. doctors had no idea when i saw them about it years ago. im at a loss here
i also have this problem and do not even know who to see about it. I took my daughter to the city last winter to see a musical and ended up in the er. They took x-rays of my chest and my dr. and the time did nothing. but once i was in the er or the dr. office i didn't have the symptoms. Talk about embarassing. I was hoping you had something for me and my family who is dealing with this as well.
Hi,
I have the same Problem, did you find any answer to its causes?
