Critical Noise In Left Ear.. Not Tinnitus?

For a period of time now I've been experiencing an extremely low level hissing noise of Tinnitus in both ears, only noticible in quiet environments, nothing that's causing me to loose sleep. However the left ear has been insufferable, with sharp tweeking noises intermittently going from low to hight but constant through each day. There are times when it will completely stop for an hour or two, then returns. It's effecting my day to day life and causing anxiety troubles trying to sleep, which it turn is causing depression,

Couldn't anyone label what the more serious condition in the left ear might be?

Will be seeing a specialist for an MRI.
