tested negative for hsv 1 and 2 igg and igm

I had some kind of a bump on the shaft of my penis, which used to be extremely itchy sometimes. I had been to a skin specialist and venerologist, he told me its herpes at first sight and gave me valcivir 500mg, P 650, Zoxan for a week (which i took) and asked me to get a STD profile done. I got it done and got negative for everything including HSV 1 and 2 IGG and IGM, this was when i was taking the prescribed medication. I got it done at a different hospital and got negative again, that was 3 days after stopping the antiviral drugs.

Later when i went back to him he told me its balanitis, but he was sure its viral infection when i went to him twice earlier before i got the second test done. For a week or 2 i also had itching on & underneath the foreskin with reddish skin. This happened 2 months back when i first went to the doctor. Now everything is gone, i have no itching or bump on the shaft in the genital area since a month, there is slightly reddish skin on the tip and itches very rarely. Could anyone please tell me what you think it really was. Do i have herpes or not. I was on medication during 1st test and took the 2nd test 3 days after i finished the course. the lesion or bump dissapeared without leaving any mark.

1st test while on medication:

hsv 1 igm was 0.39 s/co             below 1.0 is negative
hsv 2 igm was 0.21 s/co

2nd test 3 days after stopping medication:

hsv 1 IgG  <2                            negative < 16
hsv 2 IgG  <2                            negative < 16

hsv 2 IgM  0.34                         negative < 0.8

method Elisa.

a week of antivirals wouldn't make a difference especially since you had been infected a year earlier if you had herpes.

we all get bumps and lumps from time to time down yonder. most of the time it's nothing worrisome at all.

Ok, I am a bit releived now.. But i will be wondering what the bump or whatever was on the shaft. Will just have to wait and see if there's an outbreak.

Thank you Grace.

thank you Grace,

But do anti viral drugs lead to a negative on the test result.

Does valcivir reduce the number of antigens in the body?

no, you'll never get a zero as a result because of the way they do the tests.

not all herpes igg blood tests are the same and some have very low accuracy rates. since you had a test I am not familiar with, I can't help you if it's accurate or not.

Also wouldnt the IGG and IGM values be completely zero for people without herpes?

i last had sex 1 year before the test..

tests were done in the best hospital in the city, they should be accurate. I wanted to know if the effect of antiviral drugs lead to a negative on the test results.

I can't help you a lot with your test results. I have no idea what the accuracy of the igg testing you had done is to let you know how reliable they are.

how long prior to your test had you last had sex?
