Herpes - slow healing

First of all, I don't know how long I have had herpes.  My gf got cold sore about 5 years old, at that time I was not aware of herpes so I thought it was just some kind of infection.  Long story short, over the last few years I am in good shape, sometimes it itch a bit but otherwise symptom free.  I never thought I might have herpes.

However, 2 weeks ago it started again.  There is no pain - just a little itchy at times (not enough to cause me to scratch it).  Other than that no other symptom.  However instead of just a small red bump I saw 2 lesions.  I went to the doctor and the doctor said it may be herpes, took a sample but told me it will take 2 weeks to test.  Gave me some medicine to take which I did.  After a day of taking medicine the sore seems to be improving as it become less red.

It has been a week now and it still doesn't seems to heal up.  It certainly looked better than a week ago but the sore is still noticable.  How long does it really take to heal this?

Yes I know visual exam is not that reliable, and mine didn't really look like any of the herpes (or other STD for that matter) picture.  Still, I want to know IF it is herpes how long it will heal.  The lab test is extremely slow here.

you and your gf should both seek out type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what regardless of the results of your lesion culture you had done. that way you know for sure who has what and can make educated decisions about what precautions to take together from this point on.

Visual diagnosis is wrong about 1/3 of the time.  Even herpes experts can't diagnois via visual exam.  This doesn't sound like herpes.  Having the culture will prove what this is but only if you got the culture within 48hrs after the lesison's appeared.  Other things can cause bumps too.
