The person I was concerned about tested negative.
My doctor didn't want to do a blood test because he believed I was ok. I think it's time for me to move on and hopefully I will feel normal again soon
Stressdo you should get the igg scores for hsv 1 and 2 from your doc
HPV has many different strains. #21 I think is one of the worse. I am no expert on any of this but I would be checking on that. it is a major cause of cervical cancer and bad news.
My doctor emailed me today and said that my blood results were "normal"
Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I took a blood test 4 weeks after an encounter (protected vaginal) and came back positve for HSV2 I was experiencing constant tingling in groin area.
When I went to my doctor and told him I was positive HSV 2.3 igg he dismissed that I had anything and pretty much told me to live my life. He looked and said if I see anything come see him. I haven't had an outbreak to my knowledge but still experience feeling in the same area.
I went back to see him a month later and after pretty much begging him he gave me a 5 day scpipt for ACY and that was it. Sound like he wants to dismiss herpes all together. I go back on Friday for another unrelated issue and am hoping to push to get on some time of permanent drug to not spread it
I went ahead and got the blood draw. Of course no one could answer my questions regarding the test.
They just said same thing as Doctor... If you have ever been exposed, then the test will report positive.
This is confusing to me. If you've ever been exposed- then you are a carrier correct? Meaning if I'm positive - I can either have an outbreak in my life or have no symptoms- but regardless- I can pass on virus at any time- correct?
Lastly- do doctors persuade people not to take test just because of psychological/emotional reasons? Or is it to protect us from a bigger consequence? If positive it will show up in our medical history and we'll have to claim it whenever we fill out a medical questionnaire etc? Is this why doctors say forget about it? They say 1 out of 6 people have it and 90% don't know. Is the doctor just trying to protect you from being that 10% ???
Most pregnant women are not tested for herpes.
That's my last comment. Please re-read my replies above, suck it up, and move on.
^ if I had HSV from a past encounter and presumably passed it to her that is...
Last question- prior to making the worst decision of my life approximately 50 days ago, I was faithful to my wife. We had our child 6 years ago. Wouldn't HSV have been addressed in one of her tests during her pregnancy?
By the way, good for your doctor and lab to steer you away from the IgM test, which is lousy -- lots of false positives, and not even good for its primary purpose, to distinguish early from late HSV infection. If you decide to test, for sure get IgG only.
"What is your advice guys- do I take the IgG test or not?"
From a risk or symptoms standpoint, for sure there is no need. But only you can decide whether testing will help you move on. Feel free to be tested if you are prepared to deal with the possibility of a positive result that has nothing to do with your symptoms or the sexual exposure described above.
I would get the igg test. If its hsv1 it is probably oral and you have likely had it a long time. If it is hsv2 you could of had it a long time but would be something you may want to disclose to your wife. I'm having my second igg test done this week (3 month) test this week. I know I have hsv1 but just confirming negative for hsv2.
I told the doctor that I just didn't want to risk infecting my wife. The doctor responded that he didn't want that either. He said that we could get the test- but he said that even if it's positive- that's not going to change how he wants to treat me. He said I could get the test if I wanted but to be prepared for what we'd do next- he said I could really blow this thing out of proportion with my wife etc.
What is your advice guys- do I take the IgG test or not? I'm thoroughly confused now...
Please go back to howards first statement that herpes is not an issue here.
I spoke to the doctor on the phone. He said that the only test my hospital offers is the IgG. He explained to me that this test will only tell us if I was EVER exposed to the virus. He said that the IgM will tell you if there's been a recent exposure - however my lab doesn't offer that test.
The doctor told me that he would advise that I don't take the blood test. He said the reason being is that since I don't have lesions- he doesn't feel that it's necessary. He explained that it's a slippery slope if I get the test because it comes back to him as either positive or negative. He said that I could have been infected with HSV kissing someone in high school or a sexual encounter 15 years ago. He continued and said- what do we do if we get a positive? Remember- it only tells me if you've EVER been exposed. He asked if he'd start treating me ? He asked if I read about all the side effects of the anti-virals?
Again- he told me he does not have a test for recent exposure. I'm kinda lost at this point...
Cultures are only accurate for showing a positive. If the sore was older then 48 hours, its even less accurate. Go have a blood test. 8 weeks post exposure would be a good indicator.
I got an email from my doctor today saying that my blood was normal. I responded to his email and asked what type of test was performed on my blood (I was expecting to see something about IgG or IgM like I see people discussing here). Instead his response was - The test was for HIV and syphillis.
I can't believe this- I am so frustrated!
I specifically asked for a Herpes test at the urologist almost 2 weeks ago and she sent me to the lab to give urine. The lab obviously couldn't do anything with the urine- but instead of knowing that- the urologist told me to go back to the lab several days after to give urine again! So I wait several more days until she tells me that I'll need to do a swab if I still want a test.
I go to my doctor for the swab and blood, have been waiting on pins and needles- only to find out my blood wasn't tested for Herpes.
My doctors response was- "we did a culture for HSV"
Please let us know your results stressedo. I'm in the same boat
The last couple days have been rough. I haven't been able to sleep much and I've been sweating a lot in my sleep.
I think that the lymph node on my left side groin is swollen and I have an itch sensation in my left thigh area but no redness.
My urethra swabs came back negative, but Howard said they were pointless to begin with. I still feel like I have to pee most of the time and I'm still very scared. Waiting on blood results....
Johnny, you should start your own thread out of respect for stressedo.
Yes 30 is old and way to high for 19 days.
Howard would an igg score of 30 indicate a long time infection? Too high for 19 days after incident? Thank
The evidence that johnny20 doesn't have herpes is just as strong as your own. Both of you need to work to accept the scientific evidence and knowledgeable opinions and advice you have received. You might read johnny's own thread, including the comment I made on Sept 20:

1) Almost no lab tests are 100% perfect, same for the HSV diagnostic tests. But they are very good. A swab test for herpes would be pointless. It will be negative, but that in itself will not prove you don't have herpes. Around 80% of newly infected people have positive blood tests at 6 weeks.
2) Already answered above: no.
Herpes diagnosis isn't nearly as "elusive" as you think you have learned in your online searching. For the vast majority of patients, the diagnosis is simple, direct, and reliable.
Do not let your mind focus strictly on the lab tests. You have to consider the totality of information, including exposure history (partner not infected) and symptoms (not consistent with herpes -- not even close!). Should you have a positive blood test, it will mean a) you were infected sometime other than the exposure you are worried about and b) you have asymptomatic HSV plus some other cause of your symptoms.
Really, mellow out about this. There is no way herpes explains your symptoms, and no chance you were infected. And even if herpes were seriously in the picture, you are overreacting. Nobody wants genital herpes, but it's nowhere near the horrifying problem you fear.
I'm in the same boat. I have had a burn/pain in my penis going on 11 weeks since my encounter. I have tested positive for hsv1 but no clue if it oral or genital. It has severly impacted my life. Everyone says hsv would not last this long but it seems like hsv is different for everyone. Let me know if you find anything out.
