Pretty sure I got HSV1.

Three days after my boyfriend performed oral sex on me, (I'm a woman), I developed diffuse vaginal redness, and some very minor itching/irritation. I noticed a white spot right smack in the center of my clitoris a day after this started, and it's sort of painful, but I wouldn't notice it unless I poked at it. I also noticed that my vulva was sort of "peeling skin" and little tiny pinprick size vesicles appeared in a few places. They were all isolated and not in clusters. I immediately went in to see my doctor, and she said that she saw the redness, but highly doubted it was herpes, but took a culture anyway. She also gave me a vaginal exam, and took a sample and said that she saw some yeast, so she gave me diflucan and sent me on my way.

Here is were my head explodes: 3 weeks ago, I had my boyfriend take a Herpeselect test. It was conducted well within the appropriate time range (5 months after he last even kissed anyone). He has never had a cold sore, and the Herpeselect showed that he was negative for both HSV1 and HSV2. I saw the antibody titers myself from the lab printout, and they were definitely negative (both were under 0.18). I was 100% HSV1 and 2 negative prior to this incident (had a western blot, many herpeselect tests that were all negative in the past just because I'm in the field of health care and know about gG deficient strains, so I'm overly paranoid and that's why I got the WB).

Now I have to sit and wait in fear. I know that the herpeselect can miss 1/10 people, but couple that with the fact that he's never had any symptoms, and certainly didn't have any when he was with me, how likely is it that what I have going on is herpes? What else could it be?

Update: all blood tests and the culture came back negative. The lesions themselves healed up fully in about 48 hours after the Diflucan was started. Five  days after the first symptoms, I'm completely fine. Just goes to show you that yeast can do some nasty things.

Hey Grace,

I went to get a second opinion (my gynecologist) and he said that it was a cutaneous yeast infection. He actually took out a colposcope to look at the plaques on my clitoris, and was able to rub one of them off. He said he didn't suspect herpes at all, and only cultured me for yeast and bacteria.  I still have irritation, and little red spots where it looks like the skin was rubbed off in some patches, but it doesn't hurt to the touch. They look really superficial, whereas herpes is deeper in the skin, and would leave ulcers he said. I feel better after taking the diflucan. It's been less than 24 hours, so I'll see how things go and update here when I get back the culture.

your symptoms don't sound like herpes. yeast was what I was thinking when I first read it and you were treated for that.

at this point, no real reason to think herpes. wait for your culture results.
