footslap?

I have ms and notice my L foot slaps down when I walk. It'd getting worse. My neurologist says its from ms but never told me what it's called or the cause.
Anyone know? Not a big deal I guess but curious.

I think they refer to it as Foot Drop.  Medically it is a failure to the anterior muscles near your shin to pull the foot up into dorsiflexion.  The muscles on the back of your calf (gastrocnemius muscle) are quite a bit larger and more powerful than the anterior tibialis muscle that pulls the foot up.  If it becomes a problem with tripping or creates falls, there is a simple ankle orthosis that can keep the foot in a more natural position and help prevent trips and falls.

You might try your orthotic again - if it really irritates your leg to wear you should have it checked out by the therapist who fitted you for it to make sure it is correct.  Just simple things like a change in weight can throw off how the orthotic fits.

I'm trying ampyra - just started it - and hope to see a difference with this problem.  The mechanical act of walking can be complicated for us!

Beema, Bob is right about the foot drop.  Just watch out for throw rugs, cracks in sidewalks, and dust bunnies, all of which can trip us up when we least expect it!

I would guess that you notice the foot slapping even more when you have been active or are tired.

Bob- thanks. I know I.have footdrop as i have the orthodic which I.don't wear as it is so uncomfortable. I was given that because I was constantly stubbing toe on R foot and tripping over nothing. Didn't connect the two.:)
