Don't give up. Chemo may help. My mum was diagnozed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in Dec 2007 and she is still around today. While surgery cannot be done at this time, chemo may have a chance to shrink them to 'manageable' size so that surgery could be an option again. Do explore your options with the doctors. Chemo can be tough but with help and support, your mother should be able to get through it.
Welcome, Sarge. You'll find incredible support here. Don't be afraid to discuss anything that's on your mind or heart.
Hi,
I am sorry to hear about your mom. In Stage 4 ovarian cancer it means the cancer has spread to other major organs, usually the liver. Often tumors at this stage invade the organs so it makes it impossible to completely remove them. Chemo is the most commonly used method of treatment for this stage of cancer. It often is able to cut back the cancer cells that were't able to be removed during surgery. But, your mom's age, current health, preferences and your doctor's suggestion will be necessary to decide her treatment. I liked what Karen said in the above post about how she has gone on to enjoy many more days since having a stage 4 diagnosis. Your mom will have pain, need medications and most likely ongoing chemo but I hope there are many more good days for you to share with her. Best wishes.
Shelly
Hi there,
First, I'm sorry for your news. It is a very hard blow to be told surgery can't help, but don't give up hope. This disease behaves on its own terms and own speed. There is no "typical path", therefore it is impossible to forsee the path your mom will take. Chemotherapy is available and tolerable for most so take it if its an option. I have stage 4 ovarian cancer and was diagnosed over three and one half years ago. I have gotten many enjoyable days since that diagnosis and perhaps your mom can too. Good luck!
Karen
