Sunday Weigh in December 24, 2023

Good morning everyone.  Well, I suppose those of you who celebrate Christmas are all ready, if you haven't already celebrated (aka had your gathering/dinner, opened gifts).  I'm mostly ready - have a couple more gifts that are supposed to arrive from Amazon today, but they really won't be needed until sometime in January as they're for my daughter and granddaughter.

We were going to have Christmas tomorrow but my daughter's ex is taking their daughter to PA for Christmas vacation and her found that traveling on Christmas Day would save $$$, so that blew our Christmas.  Of course, I'm not sure we'd have been able to have it anyway... my husband left for a cruise on Dec 17 and on the second day he got horrible diarrhea and vomiting.   He chose not to seek any medical care on the ship, so we don't know what caused the issue - could have been anything from food poisoning to the flu.  He ended up spending the entire cruise onboard the ship - most of it in his room, except for the times he went for food (very few as he was unable to keep much down).  The past couple of days, he's been eating a little bit at a time - yesterday, he ate several small meals and kept it all down and the diarrhea has been cleared for several days.  He says he's very tired.  The ship docked this morning and he's currently on his way home.  I'm guessing that once he gets home and gets some rest in his own bed/recliner, he'll perk up pretty quickly.  We'll see.

We're supposed to go out to lunch tomorrow but we'll have to see if he feels up to it.

Anyway, I've been very busy all week since husband has been away.  Monday was the Holiday luncheon for my calligraphy guild.  That was a smashing success.  The rest of the week, I stayed home and worked on Christmas presents and other projects.  Friday, I did lawn work most of the day and yesterday, I had an appointment to get my hair done, so I met my daughter and granddaughter for lunch, then we went to the nail salon.  Daughter and granddaughter, each had a manicure and I had a pedicure.  Oh, that felt so good.  I really need to start doing that on a regular basis, as it really does calm my neuropathy, even if only for a few hours.

I eat a lot differently when husband isn't home, plus I walked all but one day while he was gone.  I haven't weighed today, but on Friday, I was down a pound from last week - yay me!!  I'm hoping I can keep it that way, once husband is home and he wants "normal" food, it's likely the weight will come back.  We'll have to see.  Anyway, I'm happy with it for this week and plan to do my best to keep it up!!

So, that's my story - what about you?  Busy getting ready for Christmas?  If you don't celebrate Christmas, do you have other activities that take up your time, this time of year?

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS~~

Hi Barb and Annie
I am up 2.6 pounds since the beginning of this month. I'm glad all the festivities are done that include food. As much as I told myself I would not eat junk, I still found myself eating things I told myself I wouldn't.
I've been getting bad headaches and today I was sick with nausea.
I started a cardio class 2 weeks ago through my community college. It's an online class that I report my cardio exercise through an app called Strava. Even though I upped my cardio it seems to have upped my appetite.
Annie sorry to hear about the car accident I hope your husband is OK. It seems like a lot of people are getting Covid lately.
Barb your hand strength will probably return this year. I wish I could do calligraphy.
Well it's a New Year and my new years resolution is  to get ten pounds off my body.

Well, Athena, up 2 is not up 5 or 12, so good for you for holding the line that far anyway. :-) If you're getting headaches, you might take a Covid test just to be sure you don't have it.
Athena - I totally agree that up 2 is a lot better than up 5 or 10.  Let's face it, we've just come through the holidays with all the tempting food - sugar, salt... enough said.

Some types of exercise can increase the appetite - I'll have to research that again.  Also check any meds you're taking; some can tend to make you more hungry.

I have some exercise equipment coming to help with my hand strength, so yes, I'm hoping it gets better this year.  Oh, anyone can do calligraphy.   I always had really good handwriting, but that doesn't make a good calligrapher... My calligraphy guild has members all over the country and even a few international, so if you're interested, send me a personal message and I'll send you link to our guild.  Most of our meetings/events are hybrid (both in person and on Zoom).   Let me know if you'd like more information.

I don't do New Year's resolutions, but I try to reach goals.  I'd like to get 30 pounds off, but we'll see how that works out!!   Good luck to you.

Hi, glad your party was a success, Barb! I made it through the Cookie Bake, and in fact was so busy getting ready that I had lost two or three pounds before it. The next morning, I was exactly the same weight as the day before, but this morning I was up a little. But I'm still a pound and a half less than last week, doubtless due to all the lifting, toting, vaccuming, dusting and putting things away in the days before the event.

This was our first Christmas since our mom died, and it was noticeable, a little bit like the star was missing from the top of the Christmas tree. But there are also new parents in the family and cute babies (two of them born to my sisters' children and one to my husband's niece) making it perfectly clear that life goes on. The group was pretty happy and glad to be together.

Besides cleaning, I did get our house nicely decorated for the season. Some years we've done more fancy trim, but the tree is up with the lights and ornaments, there's a garland on the mantle and some strings of lights outside, and we even blew all the leaves off the walkways in honor of having guests not slip on wet leaves in the dark. I also got a whack at some boxes of stuff that have been taking up space in our bedroom. It wasn't a good use of time to sort them, I had more immediate things to do, but I was at least able to put those that I didn't have time to empty into our closet, so we can walk into the bedroom without barking our shins on box flaps.

The night before the cookie bake, my husband was taking an Uber to pick up our car that had been serviced. And darned if they didn't get hit by a drunk driver. Luckily nobody was hurt, but neither car was driveable and for a while they were stranded on the left side of the freeway, with big trucks going by and honking. The state police came to the rescue. I'm amazed that my husband wasn't all emotionally shaken up, but what did happen is that he now has a sore throat and is coughing. He says the Uber driver was wearing a mask and coughing a lot. It's possible the stress of the incident made it more likely for my husband to pick up the virus. Nothing you want to have happen three days before Christmas! (or ever, frankly).

I'll be taking zinc tonight to try to fend off whatever-it-is, and we'll see how we do. Have a great week!

Annie - yay for cleaning!! Every push of the vacuum or dust rag counts as exercise!!  Add in some tummy tucks and butt wiggles while you're doing the vacuuming and dusting - you have your exercise routine!  Don't we wish it were that easy?  My point is that we shouldn't  discount the energy  cleaning uses.

Your Christmas decorations sound lovely.  I'm pretty lazy with that.  I put up a tree, decorate it and do a few other little things and be done.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's accident with the Uber.  I'm glad to hear no one was hurt in the accident,  Very sorry to hear about your husband's sore throat and cough.  It's good that the Uber driver was wearing a mask (might have helped?), but I hope your husband tested for Covid just to be on the safe side.
