He didn't make it

This is not a question.  I only have time for a short note now, but I'm going to read this forum every day in search of knowledge and in the hope that I may be able to help someone deal with addiction.  Last month, my son, aged 27, died of a methadone overdose.  I think this forum could have helped him, because he was unwilling to go to meetings or get a sponsor because he knew a lot of people in this area, and was afraid his struggles with addiction would screw up his pending DUI diversion so that  he would lose his license and go to jail.

When you are recovering, your tolerance goes down, and if you relapse, the likelihood of an OD from miscalculating the dose increases.  My son had three of them in a 6-month period, and we were able to get help in time to save him after he had stopped breathing.  The fourth (and last) time, he was either alone or with someone (probably a dealer) who panicked and drove him to the hospital instead of calling 911, and he didn't make it.

No matter what your circumstances are, believe me, there are plenty of people who will be devastated if you die this way.  Anything, even spending the rest of your life on methadone maintenance, is better than that.

I lost a son 5 years ago to cancer that was enhanced by the doctors not wanting to control his pain and him looking to the street for relief. He was 16 when diagnoised and 18 when he passed. Several years before that I got electrocuted on the job, to make a long story short, I'm now on a let me count again, well I've been off oxycodone and loritabs since 9:00p.m. Tuesday night. I'm at least counting by 24 hour increments now, well sometimes, it's still minutes. Methadone is as ugly as the rest of it. I just don't understand the Dr.s willingness to keep pumping scripts to adults and ignore kids/ teenagers. He didn't want to get high, he just wanted to not hurt. Thats how I started too, now, I just want out of it.

I'm sorry to hear that. Methadone is especially dangerous in this regard because of changes to the law that allow clinics to freely dispense 200+ milligram amounts. It also isn't treated as a "get high" drug (although it will knock you out in sufficient quantities. Some addicts take what they can get).

Relapsing addicts are always in danger of misjudging their tolerance. If you do relapse, ALWAYS USE DISCRETION.

Assume that your tolerance is is reduced by 1/4 usual for every two weeks to be safe. I'm not advocating drug use here, just common sense so others hopefully won't die this way.

Thanks.  This is what I wanted to warn people about.  My son definitely used methadone to get high, and it was his drug of choice.  He got away with it for several years, but when he realized it had gotten the best of him and taken over his life, and tried to get rid of it, it was much harder than he had expected.  Does anyone know of a serious methadone addict who succeeded in long-term recovery (i.e. years)?  I'm not saying there is no one, but I don't know of any.
