How do you wean off of .5 mg ativan ?

Hi - I was taking ativan sporadically for a month .5 mg here or there, and then took it steadily - 1 mg a day in 4 doses to get through a family crisis for about 10days.  I went down to not taking it for a day or so but experienced intense withdrawal symptoms. Now I am taking .25 twice a day but have not stabilized.  I want to get off it totally but the last thing I need is a seizure.  I did experience a weird electric shock sensation all through my head when I had stopped ativan for 36 hrs.  I took .5 mg and the sensaton stopped after about a half hour.  MY other question is:  was that a withdrawal symptom or was I about to have or even experiencing a seizure? The other symptom was detachment, derealization - I had motor control but it was with conscious effort.

thanks for your comments and kind help  - my doctor went away for 2 weeks right before I discovered that I was getting w/drawal symptoms!  So I haven't been able to talk to him.

Does your doctor know you are wanting to come off these?

break it in half for a few days, then break in 1/4ths for a few days.  Then stop.  How you asked youre Dr for help stopping?
