Relationship with a ex Heroin addict

Right now I'm in a relationship with a 25 yr female who claims to be off of Heroin. We have been dating for 4 months now and she is going to a Methadone program. Her other past drugs were crack, speed, blues and perks. She claims to have 1 year of no drugs. Will I be able to stay in a long term relationship with her? Especially since she has told me that she is her own addiction??

I do not think she is currently sober.....If she was 1 year clean then why is she going on methadone?  Methadone is a maintenance drug for heroin users but if she is clean she should not need to go onto it.  You have to decide what is best for you and we cannot tell you what to do.  

I would tell her though that methadone is the last thing that she will want to go onto.  It works well for heroin addicts short term but if she uses it longer than a few months or a year she will have a heck of a time getting off of it....I used methadone for about a year and a half and it was literally the worst detox I have ever faced....It was a lot longer than normal opiate withdrawal and some people can have severe side effects.....

Well, Methadone IS a drug.  It is a synthetic opiate. It's good that she's off of heroin but is she starting to taper off methadone now?  Do you know her daily dose?  Does she attend AA,groups,meetings,see a therapist,or do anything that would convey a strong desire to be in recovery from her addiction?

She says she is her own addiction?  What on earth does that mean? Did she explain? It sounds like she's hooked on herself which equals selfishness which doesn't bode well for you...

I don't think anyone can really answer that question but I would get involved with her treatment and find out how its done and participate with her.  THat will give her lots of support.  Good luck to you!
