Increasing our chance at success-triggers?

Since you have gotten clean, have you been able to reduce some of the triggers for using? I know it's impossible to get rid of them all such as stress, bad days's etc, but by reducing the ones we are in control of can really help us STAY clean. For example, I gave up a lot of friends cause it was a major trigger being around others that used and eventually I always caved in. Giving up alcohol as it was also a trigger for my coke use and getting rid off all contacts so I couldn't score as easy helped so much too. So what changes have you made to help win this battle and make it a lil easier. We all know how tough addiction is, it's a war, but with a good strategy and planning, it's a war that can be won.

Hi Gizz great ??? I like alot of the above posts cut ties.. I became very/close and dependant on my family/fiance as a support system in my early recovery and continue to have very close ?open reltationshios w/ them, I began to talk openly about my addiction and triggers and embraced being a Mum w/ a whole new additude!! Not to say that my daughter isn't or hasn't always been # 1 until i got clean was I able to see my faults and mistakes as a Mum it was very hard to come to terms w/ the fact that I was putting  DRUG!! infront of my daughter...such as having to get well b4 I became "super mum" for the day...What a joke...and to realize she was not fully safe in just my care when I was loaded that was a hard realization so that or she has given me much strength in my recovery!!!! I also picked up jewelry making it's something i always wanted to do but of course that was pushed aside..as who has time for that when u need to get high and chase ur drugs all day...lol  God how my life has changed celebrating 9mos today!! I am so glad u asked this ? b/c it takes me back to how I really lived and was "ok" w/ it...Today I see my faults and try to work on myself and selfesteem on a daily basis I actually shower and get dressed EVERY DAY!!!HAHAHAHA I always think of this saying "In remembrance lies the secret to redemption" just alittle something i keep in the back of my mind..I also got my spirituality back, so w/ all that said thanks gizzy!!!:)

My husband and I went to the pastor of our church and fessed us about what had been going on and what the onset of all this was.. major family issues... he is mentoring and helping us deal with the stress factor and also to get our spirituality back in check which we both needed very much... I think this was one of the best steps either of us could have made... I also keep a journal of my thoughts and why I began using pain pills to mask the stress I was feeling... this helps me alot so I won't forget what I am feeling right now and the memories will stay fresh to me.. I can also see progression from one day to the next

Hi Gizz, Hi Lesa!!!

I made sure my family didn't have any reason to want to talk to me anymore I really had to cut all the ties. They're a huge trigger to me.

I had to re-discover things that I like, I embrace art again and start believing I was able to do it all without them lil pills. I had to start to listen and accept the advice I was receiving and not being stubborn, that was a very hard one! lol Thanks Lesa for your advice, the best I ever received...

I'm still learning, going to therapy and to self esteem therapy, my self esteem is a huge trigger for me, I just don't believe in myself or that I'm worth anything but that's gonna change! Work in progress as sara always says!

Great post Gizz, as usual and sooooo happy to see you on here!!!

good morning Gizzy :)) lets see I told my Dr. I was a addict but he knew this already.. just wanted to make sure lol and that I did not want a refill of my Norco !! My husband had stopped his use of them although he never used more then 1 or 2 a day He has had is knee replaced and his foot surgery and only used for the shortest amount of time.. Told my sister I'm a addict and miserable so she would not offer our give if I got weak.. Picked up a hobby of photography to help fight craving and Bad Days.. Never had a lot of friends as I was very reclusive but have told 2 that matter.. and I speak of my struggles openly with my family as speaking about it with those you love helps to keep me on track.. spend time here and try to support others.. spend a lot of time in the outdoors and with my dogs. I will be putting in a garden and the guys are building me a hot house :)) Just staying busy Positive and grateful.. lesa
