I agree with hope. I doubt that two beers is really a issue at all, but it could easily become one. I would let it go now if you can.

If you have a addictive personality you should stay away from alcohol. Soon the 2 beers a day will increase. Like the above post said alcohol only makes the withdrawals worse. It is a depresant. You should at least stay away from alcohol until the withdrawals are over.
as i'm a responsible light heavy drinker
Not sure exactly what that means. How often do you drink, how much (and what) do you drink, and for how long have you been drinking regularly?
Drinking during this process is probably only making you feel worse. Alcohol is a depressant, and it exacerbates anxiety something fierce. If you're a daily drinker though, I wouldn't recommend stopping without medical supervision. You would have been much better off if you had tapered off the Xanax too, rather than suddenly stopping.
I would really recommend speaking to your doctor about all of this. That would be the safest way to handle this. You can expect to feel anxious for a while. It takes some time to readjust to not having the Xanax on board.
Why were you using these recreationally? Was it to self medicate for anxiety issues? Something else?
