damn. i had a long reply to this when i hit this evil little back-page button that's right next to my up-arrow. i really hate it when that happens.
anyway, i'll get more directly to the point. YES, it is possible to restore proper neurotransmitter levels. the feeling that life will forever be totally bland and completely flat without using (just a little) is just another lie of addiction.
FIRST, don't drink or use, at all, no matter what. if you do, you will reactivate the addiction and be out of control again. honestly, i think i remained in active addiction for about 90 days (which i've made it to only this once). so for me, most of my using wasn't so much a "reactivating" but just an end to deactivating. TIME did a nice piece on addiction that talks about the brain doing a re-set after 90 days (google 'time how we get addicted'). anyway, don't pick up and it will slowly get better . . . pick up and you go back to the beginning.
TWO, actively treat you brain chemistry. some people can restore their brain chemistry just by getting proper nutrition. others, i think most, need some help. what worked for me was the program of amino acid supplements outlined in End Your Addiction Now, by charles gant. he was a consultant at my last rehab and i was taking packs of supps (like 12 caps) twice a day for 4 months of rehab and 6+ months after. other good books are The Mood Cure, by Julia Ross and Seven Weeks to Sobriety, by Joan Larsen.
i equate these two things, not-using and addressing brain chemistry, with a plane building up enough speed to take off and fly. that's no doubt necessary, but the pilot must know ho to fly or it's all for not. to learn to fly i went (and still go) to lots of 12 step meetings and read everything about addiction/recovery that i could find.

I've heard of people being prescribed the anti depressant Wellbutrin to make use of the naturally occurring dopamine and norepinephrine. I know it helps some people. Maybe you should talk to your doctor. At least Wellbutrin has no sexual side effects. Talk to your MD though.
With methadone yes, with methamphetamine it is possible that there is permanent damage. Why do you ask?
HI welcome to the forum, are you talking about methadone?
