Pregnancy and Opiates

I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with baby #3. My youngest just turned 1 so this was a BIG surprise!!! I have had chronic back pain, car accidents; surgeries...need another but have to wait until the babies are old enough to walk since I won't be able to pick them up for 6 months! With my last pregnancy I was taking 1 10mg Norco every night after work. I had surgery a few months before I became pregnant I wasn't on a very high dose to begin with but was in a really bad car accident a couple of months before I found out I was pregnant and it totally reversed anything that surgery had done for me so back on the pain meds I went. Anyway I took the norco's until the day I delivered. Baby was happy healthy NO problems...slept through the night at 3 weeks, eats like a little piggy all that. My dilemma now is after the delivery back on the high does meds 2 20mg oxy er's along with 8-10mg perc's everyday all day. When I found out I was pregnant I quit taking the 20mg er oxy's all together and cut down to 4 10mg's a day until beginning of Sept. then weaned down slowly and had the OBGYN switch me to vic's because the WD from oxy is so much worse than the vic's. I am now on 15mg of vic a day...if I took high doses in the beginning of my pregnancy and am now on 15mg and stay that way until I deliver will my baby be born addicted? Has anyone else been in this situation? I know I am physically addicated to these things but I can go at least 17-20hours without taking one. I do it everyonce in a while just to make sure I can!

I unfortunatly had to take vicodin, as well as oxycodone while I was pregnet with my daughter. I have a bulging disk that supports my uterus and pinches my siatic nerve and when I was about 6 months pregnet the pain was so horrible I could barely walk. Considering I was doing daycare as well as also had a 4 year old to chase after my doctor prescribed the pills. My daughter is extremely healthy and very advanced for a six month old dispite the fact I had to take the pills while pregent. What I advise you from my own personal expirence is to watch out after you have the baby. With having other kids at home it is really easy to take them for your pain in order to be super mom. Which sadly I did after the c-section with my daughter and several other issues which caused severe pain. As long as you are upfront with your doctor and he/she is monitoring how much you take it doesnt necessarily your baby will be born addicted. I took them right until the time I went into labor with no problems, but I was super careful about taking them while pregent. Good luck! I hope this helps

I went through this exact senerio just a few months ago!! I had been taking pain meds for 2 years straight, got pregnant with my 4th child and was terrified that I was going to have to withdraw and be sick while pregnant. However after talking with my OBGYN , my paid dr. and a speicalist they all told me to try to taper down as low as I could handle and not to worry about getting totally off. They all told me that if I went cold turkey I could possibly miscarry. I was so scared of my baby being addicted, which they all said could potentially happen. I was taking 8-10 percs or vics a day. I managed to get down to about  5-6 a day, but that was it. Was taking them everyday even up to delivery. Had an epidural during labor and had a HEALTHY 7.13 lb baby boy. All my dr.s told me to breast feed my baby  so that he wont go through withdrawal that bad as he would still be getting some type of the meds through the breast milk to ween him off. I dont think he ever went through any sort of withdrawal tho, cause I breast fed him faithfully for like a week, but he wasnt getting enough, so I was both breast feeding and bottle feeding after a week and he did extremely well. Then after 3 weeks, i was only bottle feeding and he did well with the switch, in fact even better!! I was surprised, because EVERYONE told me the baby would be addicted and he would need to stay in the hospital under special care to ween him off for a few weeks after he was born. I had absolutely NO problems during birth or otherwise. This is only my experience and I am not a dr., but you are welcome to ask me anything you need to, I was in your same shoes and scared to death for myself and my baby!! I wish there had been someone to ask these questions too, but I didnt have anyone... feel free to email me anytime! Good luck to you and your new one!
