Trying so hard to quit opiates cold turkey... Will this pain ever stop?!

I have been taking pain pills for about 2 years now.. I am to the point I can take a script in a day or 2... I want to quit sooo bad but the pain is unbearable. When will it stop?! What helps? Please someone tell me it's going to be ok.

Desperately awaiting...

Welcome to the forum! Wanna know something weird? Alot of times the pain gets more manageable without the pain pills! One of our fabulous nurses will come along and tell you more about that I'm sure. I don't know how or why but I know its true. Making the decision to quit and sticking with it is the most important step! Are you ready to quit?

Hi there and welcome! The phenomena that Rosy was speaking of is called opiate induced hyperalgesia. It is a very common occurrence. Basically if you suffer from chronic pain and take opiates, your brain begins to trick your body into thinking it has way more pain than it actually has. Initially when you quit taking the opiates you have increased pain, but with time you will find that you have less pain off of the pills than you did while taking them. As far as withdrawal symptoms go, there are several things that you can do to help you through. Staying hydrated is a biggie. No caffeinated beverages. Lots of water, juice, and gatorade. Try to eat as healthy as you can. Lots of lean proteins, fruits and veggies. Try to stay away from fatty, processed, and sugary foods. These can increase inflammation in the body and slow healing. Stay as busy and active as possible. Exercise really can help with the restless legs, pain, and anxiety and it also speeds up your healing. Let us know what specific symptoms you are having and we can recommend remedies that will help to ease them. Please stick around and keep posting. You can do this! We are here for you and will be cheering you along every step of the way! Take care and try to keep your head up.

This is a great forum for support.  I'm only on day 9; the physical symptoms are better, but I'm still suffering and having severe intense cravings.  Hang in there; we are in this together.  I went to my first 12 step meeting in a while last  night and feel better mentally.

There are many naturak things you can take for sleep..BUT I wanted to comment on what you said about it being in your head. This disease is a disease of the brain. There are alot of wiring and such that gets whacked out.
Do some home work and look up all you can about the Disease of Addiction and the Disease of Addiction and the Pleasure Pathway beyond willpower. It will talk about the Dopamine which goes up and we have some pleasure surges..This all is in the Mid-brain and the mid-brain (survival part) remembers this and can play the tape over and over again for just one more. Also it has alot to do with knocking down the endorphins, gabba, serotonin, and some on the nor-epinephrine. I did put some of this info in my Journal..One is the Nature of Addition and the other one is the Pleasure Brain..Feel free to take a look..Meanwhile find all you can about the map of the brain and what the substances do..Also try to hit some meetings..We have to have face to face support too..This is a life long Journey for real addicts and it takes a lot of work and support..I wish you the best and I am glad you decided to get clean when you only had a short time in..You could of wasted most of your life on these darn drug/alcohol.
Bless
