I told the doctor that I just didn't want to risk infecting my wife. The doctor responded that he didn't want that either. He said that we could get the test- but he said that even if it's positive- that's not going to change how he wants to treat me. He said I could get the test if I wanted but to be prepared for what we'd do next- he said I could really blow this thing out of proportion with my wife etc.
What is your advice guys- do I take the IgG test or not? I'm thoroughly confused now...
Please go back to howards first statement that herpes is not an issue here.
I spoke to the doctor on the phone. He said that the only test my hospital offers is the IgG. He explained to me that this test will only tell us if I was EVER exposed to the virus. He said that the IgM will tell you if there's been a recent exposure - however my lab doesn't offer that test.
The doctor told me that he would advise that I don't take the blood test. He said the reason being is that since I don't have lesions- he doesn't feel that it's necessary. He explained that it's a slippery slope if I get the test because it comes back to him as either positive or negative. He said that I could have been infected with HSV kissing someone in high school or a sexual encounter 15 years ago. He continued and said- what do we do if we get a positive? Remember- it only tells me if you've EVER been exposed. He asked if he'd start treating me ? He asked if I read about all the side effects of the anti-virals?
Again- he told me he does not have a test for recent exposure. I'm kinda lost at this point...
Cultures are only accurate for showing a positive. If the sore was older then 48 hours, its even less accurate. Go have a blood test. 8 weeks post exposure would be a good indicator.
I got an email from my doctor today saying that my blood was normal. I responded to his email and asked what type of test was performed on my blood (I was expecting to see something about IgG or IgM like I see people discussing here). Instead his response was - The test was for HIV and syphillis.
I can't believe this- I am so frustrated!
I specifically asked for a Herpes test at the urologist almost 2 weeks ago and she sent me to the lab to give urine. The lab obviously couldn't do anything with the urine- but instead of knowing that- the urologist told me to go back to the lab several days after to give urine again! So I wait several more days until she tells me that I'll need to do a swab if I still want a test.
I go to my doctor for the swab and blood, have been waiting on pins and needles- only to find out my blood wasn't tested for Herpes.
My doctors response was- "we did a culture for HSV"
Please let us know your results stressedo. I'm in the same boat
